Musical ramblings (Part 2/42)

Am back, this time with some choice Tusshar Kapoor specials! *mwaaahahahahahaa .. maniacal Mogambo-style evil laugh* What is it about this guy that makes it impossible to say his name without a dig or potshot about him in the next sentence? Loads of Tusshar bashing follows but lets begin on a more positive note :)

(Music links on musicindiaonline.com)

  1. Jhankaar Beats (Vishal-Shekhar) — ‘Lots of masti, lots of timepass, lots of dhamaal!‘ A soundtrack that totally appealed to me, although i’ll admit, part of it was the intentional RD Burman feel. (All hail the loRD!) Good melodies, wonderful arrangements, due importance to individual instruments, spirited singing, all come together to create an album with a whole lot of pizzazz! I’ll listen to all the songs happily, but my picks for the day are ‘jhankaar‘, ‘jab kabhi‘, ‘tera muskuraana‘ and ‘suno na‘.

    • Jhankaar‘ is totally RD-ish, singing wise too. A lot of the musicians who played in this song were from RD’s troupe, I believe and Sudesh Bhosle does a good job of imitating RD’s singing style. Bursting with enthusiasm, its a very obvious ode to the ‘Monica o my darling‘ type stuff from the 70s. Boy the bass guitaring brings back such fond memories of Pancham! *sighh*

    • Good electric guitar work once again in ‘jab kabhi‘ and does Kay Kay know how to hit high notes when he sings, or what!

    • Tera muskuraana‘ — Heavy on the synthesizer, this racy, breezy song grows on you after a couple of listens. Reminiscent of the electronica-inspired but also bass-heavy numbers that RD created in the mid to late 80s.

    • I love ‘suno na‘. Don’t ask me why, I just do. Wonderful electric guitar work and minimal use of instruments, unlike the noise that dominates today. Plus i’ve lately started to really like Shaan’s voice a lot and he sings this song well, so maybe that has something to do with it.

<digression rant> — When I say this soundtrack appeals to me cos of the RD factor, let me get on the soapbox and state that I think baloney like Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar (which simply took RD tunes, changed the interludes a little, that too for the worse and had them resung by today’s singers) is not what I consider to be music, forget an ode to RD. The music of Jhankaar Beats in that sense captures the essence of Pancham in a much better way. As a movie too it’s pretty entertaining, although not what you would call a ‘family’ film! Debut director Sujoy Ghosh does a good job. Plus Sanjay Suri and Rahul Bose.. *sigh* okay, i’ll shuttup now :) To continue rant, people like Anant Mahadevan (the perpetrator of the DVPV atrocity) just tried to ride the RD popularity wave and make a quick buck. Pancham-spirit, my foot! <end rant>

  2. Joggers Park (Tabun Sutradhar) — ‘Badee nazuk hai‘ is regular Jagjit Singh fare. I know I ought to gush over it as a loyal JS fan, but its not one of his better songs, so nah. There’s a kinda annoying synth-chorus that could have been done without. The lyrics are nice in parts though, so one could give it a listen. ‘Ishq hota nahin‘ by Adnan Sami is my pick from this album. A semi-depressing song that rises above the ordinary solely on the basis of Sami’s singing. There’s something about this guy — its not just his voice (which is kinda raw), nor his pronunciations (which range from decent to comical to atrocious) but the fact that he sings so completely dil se.. like he really feels what the song says. That spirit, the feeling that the person is really into the music/song he’s creating, that’s what makes Sami click for me!

Side note — This Tabun Sutradhar is the guy who came out with a CD called ‘Soft Instrumentals of R D Burman’ some time ago, a CD that is most commonly heard playing in the background in a typical desi restaurant in the US :)

  3. Kuchh To Hai (Anu Malik) — A baaaaad remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer starring Tusshar Kapoor (he’s the hero not the evil monster killer, although you could easily be confused :| ). My pick from the movie, ‘dil ding dong ding bole‘. The song is reasonably catchy and Sunidhi seems like she’s having so much fun! So if you can block out the image of Tusshar dancing to it, it can click for you!

  4. Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa (Himesh Reshammiya) — One of *the* worst movies of all time. Made me develop new found appreciation for Janasheen (which was my prior ‘worst movie’ status flick). My friends are of the opinion that I have a secret crush on Tusshar Kapoor (since I insist on seeing every movie of his). I am of the opinion that some healthy self-loathing never hurt anyone :| On to the song ‘nikamma kiya is dil ne‘ — a dhinchak hit category song, peppy and fast, although noisy at times (I *don’t* like the English bits), but generally very catchy. Shaan and Sanjeevani (who shone in Kareeb) sing in both versions.

Realization at the end of review — I watch a lot of really bad movies. Some by choice, that too. Tsk tsk.

my turn my turn (Can’t stop taking a dig at “Tusshar”) Check out his latest interview headline
“I woo women slowly but steadily” (”http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/773867.cms”)
Ya right !! His chance can only come after a meteor strike takes all the humans on the earth expect for one unfortunate woman. If it really happens, God help the new human race!!

Wot is it with Rahul Bose n u women… Grrrr.. I’ve seen him in person and he’s so goddamn short..3′6″ or sthg and he speaks with a funny accent. Sheeeeesh !

Thanks for Part 2 of Musical Ramblings. Enjoyable as usual. I totally agree with u that JB captured the essence of Panchamda much better than DVPV. And i cudnt agree more with ur impressions on Joggers Park. I have ruint one cassette already by rewinding n hearing Ishk Hota again n again n again..N i can never have enough of JS so Badee Nazuk rox too.

U saw Janasheen n hated it. Ekta, we have another member for our gang. High Five. I still have fond memories of the “sex and violins” (not to be mistaken for violence) routine in Janasheen *sigh* wot a pity i havent seen classics after that.

N hey, i kinda like Tusshaar (Okie, sue me) - he gives me hope. I can make it big in movies too :-)

Rahul bose is soooo totally aweeesome…ideal lech material!!..loved all the tracks in this movie…especially the thodi masti, thodi chahat…!!

But I kinda disagree on the JP song…maybe its coz the movie itseef was sooo pathetic and that song kept playing every 2 sec in the movie..almost draggginggg just like the movie…almost got irritiating after a point!!

Abt janasheen…its a must see…just to get a peek on how bad can a movie get!!!…and of course the highlight of the movie…was celina babe in her pink bikini playing violen in the middle of the sea without even moving her fingers!!!!……hehehe…Jupe just cldnt stop droooling over her;-))

    Hey Megha !
koool blogs n nice reviews ! Out of the whole lot in this review, i just LUV the songs in JB … am sure every1 here will agree :). they ve been on my song-of-the-day list for quite sometime and r back now .. thanks to MnM :-D. Other movies r just timepass but one song i like (for fun !!) is Dil Jalta Hai frm JP … LOL ! a funny style of singing … rates more like a comedy song !.

MM, u can also try posting other reviews of old songs. Like, u can do a Rafi Top 10 ! I just got off a my-song-of-the-day-became-song-of-the-week-month … “Jo Baat Tujhmein Hai” from TajMahal. I first luvd it for its tune, but then got totally bowled over by its lyrics ! You shud let me put a couple of lines here …. :-D

Rangon mein tera aks dhala, tu na dhal saki
saanson ki aanch, jism ki khushboo na dhal saki
tujhmein, tujhmein jo loch hain, meri tehreer main nahin
Jo baat tujhmein hain, teri tasveer mein nahin !

    REF:
    aks = image, reflection
    aanch = heat
loch = bending with ease, limber, lithe
    tehreer = handwriting

Haaaye Haaaaaaayyyee ! can anyone BEAT that !!!

Lately, other songs on my song-of-the-day have been

    - Teri Pyaari Pyaari Surat (ALL TIME FAV!!)
    - Dil Jo Na Keh Sakaa
    - Na Jhatko Zulf Se Paani
    - Pooche Jo Koi Mujhse

these are some of the off-beat songs (might be), but just bowled over by lyrics.

Am sorry if i went overboard writing something different than the current series u r reviewing … ;) … but cudnt stop my excitement to talk to u guyz about it !

If my enthu carries on, u might such reviews on blog. right now, i just created one to be able to post a comment here ;).

    - Arun !!!

[gvenum] Chances are high that if there is only one woman left in the world with Tusshar, that she will mutate, evolve and split into two beings :| Thanks for the link! I learnt something new about my hero today! MBA degree from US and all. Incidentally, this new Ram Gopal Verma movie that the link mentions - Gayab, is a love story about a guy with the power to be invisible. No prizes for guessing why RGV signed Tusshar for it. Cos he remains invisible for a majority of the film! Smart move I say!

[Jupe] Rahul Bose is totally, as Ekta put it, ‘ideal lech material‘ ! There’s no two ways about it. Short? Who cares. Aamir Khan is short too, and that didn’t stop me from drooling over him either. Incidentally I think Sanjay Suri is nice as well! As a friend of mine puts it, ‘he’s not just droolable, he also has that ‘ideal husband material’ look, the kind of guy you would take home to mom and dad‘. I agree totally! Squeaky-clean image plus cool dude look. Dangerous combo! :)

And yes Jupe, as they say ‘ummeed pe duniya kaayam hai‘ ! :)

[Ekta] I haven’t seen Joggers Park actually. Have heard mixed reviews about it though. So I guess that’s why the song doesn’t depress me..

I think I need to write a review of Janasheen now. You and Jupe have inspired me! *har har har*

[Hawkeye] Oh you bet! There is no feeling quite comparable to watching a really bad movie and then proceeding to gripe about it to all and sundry! Its like those ’stress balls’ that they have in modern offices. Or like kick boxing. Get it all out of your system and start afresh :) Plus it gives you a better perspective on things. Makes some of the other mediocre stuff (in life and movies) seem a lil better :)

[Anirudh] Ah yes, the title song of KDNK is indeed nice as well! The ‘haan’ retorts are very peppy and fun! :) But I have an issue with the the tune of the paras that you mentioned about. It closely resembles the tune of the antaras of ‘yeh ladka hai allah‘ from R D Burman’s Hum Kisise Kum Nahin. Tsk tsk. Par yes, copying apart, it is a sweet number!

[Arun] Thanks for creating a blog to post comments here and all! (Liked your blog name.. Loved Finding Nemo :) ) Keep writing! Yes, Jhankaar Beats has made a comeback on my playlist ever since I wrote this review. And Kay Kay can hit some high notes, that’s for sure! I’ll definitely post some older music reviews as well, although i’m more likely to do a Kishore Top 10 than a Rafi one. Just a personal preference :)

Lovely lines from ‘jo baat tujh mein hai’! Sahir Ludhianvi is one of the finest poets to grace Hindi cinema! Thank you for sharing the lines, along with the handy Urdu translations!

Wassssupppp MnM … no reviews as of yet ? arre yaar, kaam to rehta hi hain, magar music reviews ke bina yeh blog bhi soona lagta hain ! :). So, go ahead and post those reviews … guess many others like me r waiting too ;).

btw, my song for the day is “Pehli Pehli Baar” (also known as Dil Ka Qaraar) frm the movie Sangharsh sung by Sonu Nigam. Its one of the top hits of Sonu bhai. He s one amazing singer too and used to be awe of him right from SaReGaMa … I was watching SRGMP yesterday and there was a tie for the first place and this ended up being the deciding song. [I wish i can get on to that stage there … siiiiiigggghhhhhh … need a LOTTT of practise !!!]

[Hawkeye] Keep this up and i’ll claim the ‘42′ was just a typo and that I forgot the zeros at the end! :> :)

[Crush] The ramblings will be back in a few days! Thought i’d blog about something serious for a change, so took a break from my usual nonsense. :)

Pehli pehli baar‘ is a well sung number no doubt. I like the other Sonu Nigam song from Sanghursh too - ‘mujhe raat din‘, although it sounds identical to the tune of the old O P Nayyar song ‘mujhe dekhkar aapka muskuraana‘ from Ek Musafir Ek Hasina. I think Sonu excels at this genre — the intense, I-will-melt-you-with-my-love type songs. The number from Deewana (his private album) - ‘Is kadar pyaar hai‘ also falls in the same category for me.

Thanks for the links to Rafi’s concert perfomances!
