The ugly, the bad and the goodI recently chanced upon a nugget of information that left me horrified, so I thought I should promptly share it with all my readers and spread the joy. As someone once said — a hundred scarred souls are better than one. Yes that someone was me, so what?
Now, unless you were living under a rock all your life, you have heard of the movie Casablanca (1942). This Humphrey Bogart — Ingrid Bergman — Paul Henreid story of love, honor, duty and sacrifice set against the backdrop of World War II is a perennial cinema classic. But I bet you didn’t know they made a Hindi remake of it! Not just any aira gaira remake we’re talking about, mind you. None other than Armaan (1981). Bogart’s role (Rick) played by Raj Babbar (Yikes! Is there no God!?), Bergman’s role (Ilsa) by Ranjeeta (I’m still recovering from sher Babbar, so no comments) and my favorite block of wood — Deepak Parashar, playing the role of Paul Henried (Victor). Oh the horror, oh the tragedy! Oh that reminds me, the Germans are replaced by the Portuguese and the scene has shifted from World War II to Goa’s liberation. Pure joy, I tell ya.
Imagine this — the smoke filled Rick’s Cafe, Sam playing the piano, Bogey taking a long drag on his cigarette and .. <jarring scene change> .. Shammi Kapoor at the piano, Raj Babbar trying to swallow a cigarette and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better — enter Kalpana Iyer dancing to Bappi Lahiri’s ramba ho samba ho. Or is it Prema Narayan? Either way, it scars you for life, eh? Well, that’s about it for ugly.
Now for something a li’l more worth your time. A couple of days back, I got a very interesting comment from Braveheart on my Ghost stories blog. I am quoting the relevant portion here—
You have rightly pointed out that there is no reason God should be more respected than Ghost. But we the weak human beings protect us always through defence mechanisms. God is our biggest spoof, out strongest protector. We take refuge in his arms all the time. But Satan should be worshipped just as much. I am saying this because if you dont worship him, you fight with him. And fighting with him is fighting with urself. It weakens you. It wouldn’t ever let you discover yourself.
So the key lies not in surrendering yourself, but absorbing him into urself, and hence, growing bigger than him. You should not reject what you are afraid of, you should submit, absorb and grow through it.
It got me thinking again about a topic that I often mull over.
Good is not the result of the absence of evil, but the ability to take on evil, accept that it is a part of us, and then find mechanisms to deal with it. Reminds me of a line from a song from the recent movie Swades (2004) — Man se Raavan jo nikaale, Raam uske man mein hai. To do that one first has to accept that there is a Raavan in all of us.
I don’t think this is true only of evil. It extends to a number of negative emotions in general. Grief, hurt, fear, turmoil .. I once had a conversation with a friend about relationships. She mentioned that she avoids getting emotionally involved ‘cos it can lead to grief and pain and she doesn’t want to get hurt. I remember that my reaction was that as long as she avoided that pain, she’ll never learn to deal with it. It is much better that she jumps into a relationship and handles that hurt if and when it comes, and thus, no longer *fears* the pain. Not quite in the same spirit as good vs evil, I know.
They say that peace comes not from the absence of conflict in life, but from the ability to cope with it. True of inner peace too. Acknowledging one’s inner demons, and yet not letting them consume us, is one of the toughest things to do.
That, and keeping a straight face while watching Armaan.

Yeah, we all have elements of good and bad inside us. Like the chinese yin and yang. but we’ve to face it that good is good because bad is there and good is good because it overcomes bad.

“man se jo Raavan ko nikaale Ram uske man mein hai”- wonderful thought. You need not go anywhere else, our mythology is so great.

Cool thoughts..
But I couldn’t digest “Worshipping” satan. I mean, okay, accept that there is the devil in all of us, and try to overcome it. Accepted. But no need to worship! Is there? I guess braveheart may be in a better position to answer this. Just my thoughts.
btw… you’ve totally revamped the comments page! I, for a moment felt blogger ppl had done this, and checked the comments page of my blog. Which sadly has the same old drab facade :( . This looks tooo tooo too cool!
I love you!

Okay MVA, I’ll explain that to you.
What is worshipping? How do you worship? –
Worship means submission. It means you SUBMIT. When you submit, you lose your EGO and try to be in unison with the soul that you worship. That is submission. And thats the only way to absorbing His qualities. To be in unison with him needs such submission. This submission makes way for Him settling into you. This is how you absorb Him.
Now if you want to grow and let Satan be absorbed inside you as well, you Must worship him.

[Mad Van Arthur] Thank you thank you! Not to worry, I’ve sneaked into your blogger account and fixed it so your comments look cool too ;) *ahem*
Now now, don’t panic. I didn’t do any such thing. This is blogger’s doing, not mine, so no credit to me. I checked on your blog as well and it works there too. You have to click on ‘Post a Comment’ on the post page, not the ‘N comments’ link on your main page. Hope that helps! :)

megha, u r right abt liberating one’s fears by fighting against them rather than running away from them…
but, reg submitting oneself to Satan, i’ve different views…
When do one submit or accept a person or thing? when one feels that person or thing is correct..
so, if we feel that Satan is correct, then we’d be falling into his evil hands..
We can see Satan in different forms from the evil happenings in this world.. so, we can rather try to avoid by knowing these facts and not falling into his evil hands.. jus my thoughts…
BTW, me watching armaan!!! no way.. i’d rather watch the latest Arman(Anil kapoor, big B starrer)…

Akshay, I don’t think worshipping is necessarily submission.
‘…lose your EGO and try to be in unison with the soul that you worship..’
If we are talking abt the satan here - I would never want to be in UNISON with him. For me, the reason for worship would be more of adoration and respect for the powers and ‘goodness/humility’ of the subject. The concern here is defeating the devil, but absorbing him or submitting to him does not achieve that purpose.
Anyway, I guess it’s a matter of personal opinion. Am trying to post the same comment on your blog.(P.S. I already use firefox - and it ROX! :)
Megha - Thanks for the info, I was already planning on pinching this idea too :D - Now I don’t need to.

Worshipping is SUBMISSION and nothing else!
Why we need submission is what I’ll take up in a post on my blog. Enough of all this now. I’ll clear my stand now :p
There’ll be an update here when I make the post. Till then, take a chill!

If you thought Armaan was bad - have you checked out Aatank hi Aatank? Its a scene for scene remake of the Godfather.
Friday, February 11, 2005 @ 12:04 PM
“Armaan”…I am in splits mulling over what difficulties the script/dialogue team would have faced trying to get pseudo Portuguese characters speak in Portu-Hindi while trying to be very careful that they did not sound like Englishmen talking in Eng-Hindi lest they get exposed and people realize that their movie was actually the remake of Casablanca. :D
As far the debate on EVIL goes, people interested may kindly read the comment I ve left in Akshaya’s blog where I’ve clarified my stance.
Apologizes to Megha for using her blog as a forum to address others.

Your post jogged me to the scene where Rick Blaine says
“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

I hate to do this, but u being a Pats fan, lemme know whatcha think of my post on the Pats, titled “putting the “D” in dynasty”. I’m not linking it for the fear of you accusing me of spamming! ;)

First of all, I am more than happy about discussing this topic in my comment space, even if the original comment that sparked the controversy was not made by me. What is it that some wise gentleman said about opinions being akin to a certain body-part and how everyone has one? Something like that. So yes, it’s always good to hear a different point of view. [Handful of Hell], no apologies are needed for using this space as a forum to address others. Address away all you want. [Braveheart], you don’t have to apologize for clarifying your stand on my blog. I quoted you, so it’s natural that questions will be asked, and you will want to reply to them.
Second of all, I think a clarification is in order here, from my side. I quoted Braveheart, not because I endorse his views in their entirety, but because his views were related to mine. My opinions on this matter have already been expressed in my blog, so I won’t repeat myself here. As for questions about whether Satan should or shouldn’t be worshipped, some of those have already been addressed by Braveheart in the comments here, and the rest will probably be best answered by him on his blog. My comment responses below are specific to my opinions. Hope that cleared things up a little.
[shantanu] Well said. Good is good, because bad exists.
[Padmanabhan] So true!
[missnupur] Thank you! Glad you came by. Hope to see you around again :)
[Mad Van Arthur] Braveheart has addressed your comment, and I have clarified my stance above. So hopefully it is all cleared up.
The new commenting interface is very cool, but I wish Blogger gave us more control over its look and feel. In a later version, perhaps..
[Prasad] I question the ‘not falling into his evil hands‘ part. For that we are basically assuming that evil is OUTSIDE us, which I think is wrong. Satan/evil is not an external entity for it to trap us. It is INSIDE us. And how much we encourage or discourage it determines how big a part of our lives it becomes.
[Gamesmaster G9] I haven’t seen! I haven’t seen! And now you’re giving me the enthu to commit the crime! :)
[Handful of Hell] Oh yes, that took some cautious movie-making, for sure! :) I think all Hindi movies of that era that needed a ‘foreign‘ character (be it Portuguese, English, American..) had a single solution to their problems in the form of a certain gentleman by the name of Tom Alter :) And no apologies needed. Please see my monologue above. Glad you came by!
[Paddy] Ah yes. So many moments and memorable lines from the movie come to mind —
Rick to Captain Renault at the end of the film - I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Victor’s response when Rick comments on the futility of his (Victor’s) dedication to his cause - You know how you sound, Mr. Blaine? Like a man who’s trying to convince himself of something he doesn’t believe in his heart.Ilsa to Rick - Kiss me. Kiss me as if it were the last time.Rick to Ilsa - .. it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.Captain Renault - Round up the usual suspects.and many many more!
[Sriram] I certainly won’t blame you for spamming if you link it, so feel free to do so in the future. However I can’t vouch for my readers. The world has become a rather cruel place, you know :) Sorry I haven’t had a chance to come by, read and comment yet. Will do so soon!

“as long as she avoided that pain, she’ll never learn to deal with it. It is much better that she jumps into a relationship and handles that hurt if and when it comes, and thus, no longer *fears* the pain.”
Can’t agree more. I also like the quote on your orkut profile.
“What doesnot kill you, makes you stronger”….
Nice post.

[gvenum] Ah yes, it is a quote I am very fond of .. By the German writer and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.
Glad you liked the post!

thank you. i was wondering since long if the Casablanca was remade in Hindi and i got my answer over here. Actually i think it is a good story to be remade to Indian audience, eh? but the cast of Armaan seems disastrous. I wonder how it would turn out if Karan Johar directs it with Shah Rukh Khan(Rick), Kajol(Ilsa) and Ajay Devgan(Victor). laughs.
