Swimmy

(Inspired by a comment from Sagnik and sponsored by your local pet supply store.)

Once upon a time, long long ago (okay not *that* long ago) when I was a kid, I, like thousands of other kids before and after me, went to my mom, tugged at her saree pallu, made the most angelic wide eyes possible, and in my cutest voice asked her:

Me: Ma, can we get a dog?
Ma: No.
Me: Why?
Ma: You’re not old enough to have a dog.
Me: Oh? .. *scowl*
Ma: Yes.
Me: Oh .. *walk away sulking which mom duly ignores*

Two days later:

Me: Ma, can we get a dog? *hopeful look*
Ma: No.
Me: Oh .. (Confused why mom said no. I *was* older no?)

Three days later: (See I was learning, three better than two.)

Me: Dog? *eternal hopeful look*
Ma: No. And when you’re old enough to have a dog, I’ll tell you. So stop asking.
Me: Oh-kaay .. *slinking away unhappily*

Another three days later:

Me: Ma, I finished all my homework.
Ma: *smile* Good girl!
Me: Ma, can we get a cat?
Ma: *exasperated sigh* I told you I’d tell you when you were old enough, didn’t I?
Me: But you said to not ask for a dog..
Ma: *dirrrrrrty look* Meghaa .. !!
Me: *scurrying away*

And thus the saga continued. Cat, dog, rat, horse, goat, neighbor’s baby .. all the requests were met with the same stern emphatic NO. As I got older, the ‘no’ would sometimes be accompanied with a short explanation to appeal to my logical side. ‘A horse won’t be able to climb stairs na?‘ (we lived in a fourth floor apartment), or ‘No, if we steal neighbor-aunty’s baby she won’t send over gajar halwa1 any more.‘ Now I was a reasonable, gajar-halwa loving kid, so I obediently listened. Every time. And an entire childhood was wasted without a single pet in the house .. *sigh*

Years went by, chia-pets and tamagotchis came and went (no I didn’t own any, thank you very much), but the longing for that elusive pet remained. Lousy apartment rental rules and uncooperative roommates did their best to deter me. But my resolve was not to be broken. And finally, last year, it all changed. A li’l orange fella arrived home.

Now for the next step. The name. As any self-respecting owner of a pet will tell you, every pet deserves a name. They too have feelings. Would you like it if people pointed at you and called you a human or a homo sapien? True, there are some that might take that as a compliment, but let us not digress.

Remember the Doordarshan/NFDC short-film about a school of fish that were always scared of sharks? Then this chhotu orange-colored fish called Swimmy comes by, teaches them to form the shape of a big fish (with Swimmy as the eye) and they scare the big sharks away. The moral of the story was strength in unity and all that good stuff. If you don’t remember this movie, then you clearly didn’t waste as much time in front of the TV as I did. Anyhoo, that was the inspiration behind the name. People suggested Nemo, Blubber and what not. But I stood my ground and went with Swimmy — an ode to the childhood pet that never was .. *sniffle*

So there it stands — big round glass bowl, generic-looking plastic aquarium plant, random colorful pebbles and one small orange chap swimming away to glory — Swimmy, my goldfish.

  • 1 - Indian sweet delicacy made of carrots, milk and sugar, with copious amounts of ghee2 garnished with nuts and raisins. For a particularly decadent variety of it, please visit aforementioned neighbor-aunty.
  • 2 - Clarified butter with water and solids removed. Commonly used in Indian cooking, especially sweets. With regular consumption it is guaranteed to make you resemble a gulab-jamun3 in shape.
  • 3 - Indian sweet delicacy with deep-fried cheese balls in sugar syrup. Sometimes served warm with vanilla ice cream, much like gajar-halwa1.

    Finding Swimmy?!

I would love to have a pet…but I’m scared. Heard too many stories of friends over feeding their fishes and thus killing them!!! :O

Whenever I used to ask my mom for a dog; she would look at me and say, “One is enough, already”.

I’ve stopped talking to my brother since then ;)

My ex had a pair of goldfish named Larry Page and Sergei Brin.

Unfortunately her neighbour forgot to feed them when she was on holiday and they died.

    I named the neighbour Bill…

That was hilarious!! :) Guess what I just happened to compare this post to a typical MBA course! Sounds crazy, yep then you are right. :D This just sprung into my mind:

    1. Those notes at the end of the post reminded me of Harvard case studies!! These case studies would usually mention references at the end of the cases! :O) Uff uff! :p

    2. Started with a dog and settled for a gold fish. Good bargaining skills?! Aha!!

    3. Pleading to mom… good people management skills! An HR manager in making haan?! :D

    4. Asking for a horse? Dreaming BIG?! Good candidate to become CEO of a billion dollar company. ;)

    5. Oopzz… the comment exceeds the size of the post the way company’s losses exceed the earnings when an MBA is at helm. :p I better sign off!! :D

    Nice post btw! :)

G9 - ROTFL !! That was way too funny, man !!

M: I still can’t get over the little nifty things in this blog layout ! Really neat javascript btw ! One of my pals in college had a pair of siamese fighting fish. He named them after me and my girlfriend of the time ;) The male actually killed the female after breeding (the male takes care of the brood, becomes extremely aggressive when the female approaches them). No such luck with me, she left town before I could… ;)

but, my dad is soo afraid of dogs and cats that he never let me raise that topic atall :))
thank goodness I didn’t ask my dad for those after that.. otherwise… the reply would have been…
Me: Father, can we get a dog?
Father: sorry son, me and ur mother are already having lots of troubles with one!!! :))

    G9 - That is so funny :)

Megha - Your post reminds me of a cute little dog which we got when I was in 4th std and I gleefully named it “Micky” :d. When my parents were away for a few days, the tenants took the dog some place and dunno what they did ..it was never to be seen afterwards..this was about thirteen years after we got the pet !! *ruthless tenants, aa karma oorike podu .. sob sob*.

Aah ! NFDC short films :) I used love those films :d, this one was cute and also the other one with a cutesie song…“ek thithli, anek thithliyan….ek ek ek ..ek gilahari, anek gilahariyan …” remember ? the girl used to almost sing with her nose !! my sis used to imitate her..it was so funny *sigh*. Howz Swimmy doing :) ??

Our pet, Bobby came into the house just after I left for college, so he wholeheartedly believes that he is my parents’ real son and I am just a guest. Couple of weeks ago when I was in India, he insisted on squeezing himself in between whenever I tried snuggling up to my mom. And considering the fact that Bobby is a heavyset Labrador, my physical safety lies in playing second fiddle.

Nice post:) So, is Swimmy a girl? :D

Ok, so here’s my exit line….

    Chaturrr cidiyaan sayaani chidiyaan,

:-) “Swimmy” brings back some fond childhood memories.

My first pet was (and still is) a Dog. Dad was dead against pets so was Mom; though she was somewhat reserved in her reservations. Doggie dear was a little pup who came to our door hurt. Mama gave him a little honey and milk and doogie dear refused to budge.

When doggie dear was one, he would often go out in the street to play with (or scare, depending on his mood) human kids two/three years elder to him. Most of them would still be learning to speak and would often struggle with proper pronounciation of a lot of words. Those days the song “Ghar se nikalte he” from “Papa Kehte Hain” was very popular and for some reasons doggie dear would respond well when called as “ghar se”. The three and four year olds would often mis-pronounce it as “ghas re” and so the name stuck on.

Ghasre is now ten years old and still with us. I think he has started resembling Mayuri Congo with passage of time.

the post, rather than Swimmy, brings back some (fond?) memories! I go to my mom, and ask, “mom, can i get a dog?”. Mom says “No”. I go to dad, and repeat the question. he says “NO”. three days later… same scenario, same question to mom, and she says “No”. i sulk back to my dad and ask him the same question. dad’s reply “No”.. (ok,, this is getting long rite?) I ask him “why not?”. Dad says “Having you around the house is pain enough, and i don’t want *another* dog”. so, r’ent u better off? oh yeah, i’m yet to find a pet, and i’m thinkin of Aibo. :d

[Sagnik] Thank you. I’ll try to be better :)

[missnupur] I haven’t killed it so far, so i’ll keep my fingers crossed :)

[Rohit] Ouch! And I thought I had it bad!

[Twin-Gemini] I like how you put that :) And yes, a horse. Didn’t make that up. In fact I really have asked for every single one of the pets listed above!

[Gamesmaster G9] I laughed so hard I nearly knocked over Swimmy off the table! :) He’s still recovering. But that was brilliant!

[Fun_Da_Mental] Thank you! :) And my goodness, you actually analyzed the drivel I wrote? Nice analogy though. The next time someone plans to do an MBA, I will suggest they get a goldfish and write about it instead :) I do love simple solutions!

[Vignesh] Tsk tsk at your friend! And leaving town is definitely the preferred alternative to being killed, don’t ya agree?

[Prasad] All moms and dads go to the same School of Parenting, so they all learn the same strategies. At least that is my theory :)

[Padmanabhan] Good to know I wasn’t the only one! :)

[pingoo] Awww, what nasty tenants! Yes, it will definitely come back (as a dog) to bite them! And NFDC films were an integral part of our childhood weren’t they? I think they deserve a blog all to themselves. I still sing the ‘ek chidiya, anek chidiya‘ song in that kiddo voice, much to the annoyance of people around me :)

Speaking of Swimmy - my most common reply to people when they ask me how Swimmy’s doing - Its alive. I don’t ask for much, do I?

[Devdutt] Swimmy is an it, so no gender bhed-bhaav :) And oh, as I just mentioned to [pingoo] I still imitate that song fairly well !

Hind desh ke nivaasi sabhi jan ek hain
Rang roop vesh bhaasha saare anek hain
    Ek anek ek anek
    ..

[shantanu] I sure was. I wanted a pet. Any pet. Wasn’t picky at all! :)

[a-hem] Nemo is the best! (although I can’t say that out too loud. Someone’s feelings might be hurt) Swimmy is good. He’s alive, which in itself, is an accomplishment for me.

[Deepak] I have heard strange pet names (of pets, not of people, although people’s strange pet names are an altogether different story) and some stranger stories behind the pet names, but yours ranks very very high in uniqueness :) Ghasre! Poor Mayuri. Last I heard she was on a TV show called Kitty Party. Ironical eh? ;)

[Sriram] Every kid who grew up without a pet has the same story to tell *sniffle* :)

[Devdutt] Oh yes, they unceremoniously turned the service into a paid thing with NO warning whatsoever. The morons. Not to worry, i’ll find an alternative toy soon enough. And over time, showering love on the new one will lessen the grief of the old one. Time, after all, is the greatest healer of all .. *sigh*

[Sivani] *drool* Gajar halwa! Thankoo! (I have conveniently assumed that to be an invite. Sorry if it is not, but i’ve accepted anyway :) ) And bhaturas, YUM! Glad the chana recipe worked. Its rather barebones actually, since I simplified it for a first time cook. Can suggest some modifications, if interested :)

Megha, I *always* cook with “modifications.” I take most recipes to be suggestions, not law :-)

However since we mostly cook the South Indian way I appreciate the different ways to combine spices (and even different spices) in a recipe right from someone’s kitchen rather than from a book ;-)

True ..they all come from same school of parenting. One day out of blue, this stray cat had 3 babies inside our house. Not willing to shoo away the young kitty family, we let them stay and named them Chunnu, Munnu, Kunni. It was fine for a while till they started trashing everything inside and finally had to be “dropped” off in a temple…(u see ..we didnot want to desert them and get all the paap…)…
After that I never asked for any cat…but the desire for a dog is still there..Now I see the parents view….BTW ..eloo Swimmy.

[Sivani] Being a South Indian who grew up all over India, what we cook at home is a truly hybrid cuisine. So my modifications don’t really adhere to any regional dictats, they are are simply my experiments, and not necessarily with the truth, for that matter :) As I always tell people, there is only one rule in cooking and that is - to have fun! :)

[gvenum] Yeah, a pet is a lot of work! Even a li’l goldfish needs to be fed regularly, have its bowl cleaned, its water changed, yada yada. I can clearly see why mom said no. Oh and Swimmy say hi back at ya! :)

[Jupe] Yay! In all these commentors I finally find one soul who shares my goldfish love! :)

[tidda the grasshopper] You know, it is quite amazing to know that I -

    a) Cooked burritos (Not a big burrito fan in general.)
    b) Cooked burritos for someone other than myself (Cooking Mexican food for others has so far never progressed beyond nachos, from what I recollect)
    c) Watched them eat 8 of them (That should have been quite memorable!)
    d) Proceeded to call them a tapeworm for eating like that (Not a big worm-loving person. A pig or a dog maybe, but a tapeworm? Am not very pleased with myself.)
    e) Have no recollection of a) through d) (And I thought I was good with remembering random things.)

And i’ve cooked burritos for you, and yet I didn’t seem friendly? Some people .. tsk tsk ;) Looking forward to moving the counter beyond 3 :)
