A big honest bird

Snippet of a conversation with a friend. For the sake of my safety and future well-being as well as in her defense, let me add that she’s quite a smart gal and usually not this linguistically .. confused :) We were doing some frank and candid talking about relationships and other such high-funda stuff.

She: You know, I really like your candidacy.
Me: Oh .. ? *bulb lighting up in my head* Ah! You mean candor?
She: No baba! That’s like .. a really big bird!

Suffice it to say, I can’t be candid ever again without grinning :)

She must have read ‘honest politicians’ when reading of their ‘candidacy’… changes the meaning completely ;)

[Mustang] Ufff :) As you might remember from GK quizzes from your kidhood, and as Rajesh kindly pointed out - Condor - the largest flying bird in the Western hemisphere.

[thelearner] Ah interesting! I like your interpretation! :) Although honest politicians is an oxymoron in itself, don’t ya think?

[Rajesh] I’m working on my campaign speech. You’ll be notified soon enough :)

:) Reminds me of my best friend who, (bless her Maharashtrian soul) always insisted that I ‘remove’ tickets for the matinee show.

But my all time favourite :

Hindi teacher at an English Medium School : All of you keep quiet! The principal just ‘passed away’ in the corridor. :D

What exactly is wrong with candidacy? Why does the use of the word show momentary lapse in one’s linguistic skills? And what exactly is a bulb lighting inside your head? Don’t your ‘puritan’ sensibilities holler?

Oh and don’t mind me terribly, liked reading!

[Devdutt] Ah! Ticket nikaalo if course! :) And if the principal heard the Hindi teacher, he might just do that .. out of shock!

[Glutton Gloom] They say that a joke explained is a joke dead. I guess i’ll have to find myself a shovel now? :) But for what its worth —

Candidacy — the state of being a candidate (usually for election/office), the campaign of a candidate to be elected
Candor — the quality of being honest and straightforward in attitude and speech
Condor — largest flying birds in the Western hemisphere

Considering that I was not looking to run for President, you can now see why the incident makes me chuckle? And my ‘puritan sensibilities’? I shall pretend to have understood that and nod solemnly until you elaborate further :) Thank you for stopping by!

    [Free Spirit] :)

[Sriram] Thankoo for helping out with the explanation. And at the risk of upsetting you, yes, she is very much in the US. Oh by the way, she reads my blog :)

ps .. Your close friend is too kind. Please thank him/her for me :) Or, if they have a blog, tell me and i’ll thank them directly :)

You gonna leave a comment on my friend’s blog? Hah! You haven’t left one on my blog yet! (conjuring up voo doo magic only to see a puff of smoke) Anyways, my friend doesn’t have a blog. Cheers! (frantically waves at megha) I’ve got you blogrolled!

[Prasad] *sigh* There’s nothing worse than having to explain a joke! :( Oh well.. :)

[Rajesh] Aww thankoo! :) For just this you can have the candy that [Mustang] offered!

[Mustang] *singing* That’s what friends are for .. You’re most welcome! I am always willing to help fill the gaps in your education, you know. Thanks for the candy :)

[Manjusha] An honest bird running for President with the election symbol of a condor :)

[Fun_Da_Mental] What is that? You laugh at my dead joke? Chah! But yes, I do apologize. It is my mishtake that I was too busy getting a life :) I shall soon remedy that and go back to writing more often!

[Sriram] Yesh, admittedly I deserved that. But if your friend is making fun of you, then I was thinking that he/she might need some more support? That’s why I was volunteering! :) Okay okay, now I am being simply evil, but that’s cos your voodoo backfired, so you have yourself to blame :) But on a more serious note, and in my defense, I haven’t been very good with commenting lately thanks to being just plain busy, nothing else. Oh and what is this I hear? You’re not going to blog anymore?

Hey Megha, if you loved my blog title, I love your e-mail id :-) Terrific layout for your blog. Makes me think about redoing mine a bit. I am sure to be back here to read more of your entries. I can say that with ‘candidacy’ :-)

[Parth] Ah thank you, glad you liked! Look forward to you visiting again :)

[Mustang] Now you’ve put the image in my head of Bush running away from a big bird .. no wait, not just any big bird .. Bush running away from Big Bird (the yellow fluffy chap) from Sesame Street! :)

But now that I think about it — honest president — isn’t that just a myth? And why the heck did I think of Dubya of all people when you said that? Eeks, I need to have my head examined!
