Method in madness

As we all know, Blogger doesn’t allow post categories and I for one, got tired of waiting for them to change their minds. So I created my own with some hard-coded links. That turned out to be too easy, and as we all know, I love to complicate things. So I proceeded to waste huge gobs of time making cutesy icons that symbolically captured the essence of the category. Yeah, gobbledygook like that. Finally, considering the amount of effort wasted on this seemingly small project, it was only fair that I wrote a poem about it.

At this point you are probably hoping that the length of the poem will be similar to Vivek Mushran’s career, but .. hee haw! It is not. So here you go — some rhyme to waste your time.

Lyrically Looney Logic

Once upon a time I started a blog,
Over the months it grew.
Now I have sixty-nine posts,
Give or take a few.

I think on random tangents,
And write on some arbit things.
But one hopes, my kind readers,
A smile on your face, it brings.

To make your and my life easier,
Some changes I had planned.
Post categories I shall have, I thought,
Oh that would be so grand!

But woe is me, t’was not meant to be!
Blogger doesn’t allow it.
So I did the next best thing,
I found a way around it.

I wrote some JavaScript code,
Some expand-collapse tricks.
Added some manual HTML links,
And hey, the problem was fixed!

Teeny-tiny icons got made,
Spending inordinate amounts of time.
A picture’s worth a thousand words,
Maybe I should have hired a mime?

So now we have Relationships,
Where I talk about eight-year old Kyle.
Or categories like Introspection,
Which (hopefully) makes you think a while!

Now this silly li’l ditty has to end,
A poem this is, let us pretend?
Hey don’t you mock and heckle my verse,
Long prose would have been far worse!

Oh and another thing. I got myself listed on some four hundred thirty two different blog directory services — Blogarama, Blogwise, Blogshares, Globe of Blogs, Bloggy Bonk Bonk, Bog of Blogs, We-will-give-you-naming-rights-to-our-first-born-if-you-list-your-blog-with-us.com and so on. So if the Blah section of my blog sidebar looks like Rajesh Khanna’s psychedelic red, green and gold velvet suit from Apna Desh (1972) when he’s singing duniya mein logon ko dhokha kabhi ho jaata hai, please don’t be frightened. I promise to be kinder in the future.

did ya think of tagging the posts via del.icio.us n just linking to those tag sets here. i would certainly prefer it over to what ya have deskribed. n if ya were really worried of disturbing the collaborative bookMarkin strukture with ur less important posts, then ya kan always use tags which no one else prob would; like meghaTechnology or meghaMovies n stuff like that. it`ll be a hell lot easier

once upon a time i read a blog,
and then i read it again,
i thought is the owner’s mind piece of log?

cloudy walk became a regular exercise
    taught me meaning of ‘condor’
i swear i’ve become more wise

yumnyum is a big movie buff
she comes up with weird trivia
matchin her looney skills is tough

came a post “Method in madness”
    that settled my case
this girl surely has lost it (just as i’ve lost the rhyming scheme)

u geeky babe! u never get boring do u.

    Meghs,
so you DO have poetic skills! That is really something. Let me take to slightly off topic here. Have u read abt TOI serving legal notices to a blogger (Mediaah!)? If u’ve heard abt it, wonder why u haven’t said anything abt it. If you wanna read, drop by Shanti’s blog, or my blog to get the links.Just curious. that’s all. No bad voo doo on me please.

Hey, waddya know, it’s a poetry post. I want in on the action :D

There was once a gal, she had a blog.
Penned down digitally, her thoughts analog.
Her every utterance her fans did follow,
She was Pythia; the blog, their oracle of apollo.
And the rest of blogdom, looked on agog.

oracle of apollo - (Greek mythology) the oracle at Delphi where a priestess named Pythia delivered messages from Apollo to those who sought advice :D

PS: The first version was funnier, but a trifle harsh; so the nice person that I am…… :))

You could always do the sensible thing and switch to Movable Type. (Single user, up to three blogs, free!)

And it has lots of bits and pieces to play around with, and the added bonus of a non-flaky comment system.
It never used to be quite *this* bad when I was still on blogspot. I get a server timed out nine times out of ten recently when trying to comment on any blogger blogs.

My thesis is looming large and I should NOT be surfing the internet, but here I am reading blogs! Hmmm, seems a trifle wrong I would reckon!

But 69 posts? You sure do have a lot of say, don’t ya? And so much enthusiasm? Can such enthusiasm be contagious? Could you pass on some to me?

I am not that computer literate, but have been aching to be able to create categories without using Wordpress. (I don’t have Firefox as a browser or any of the broswers they support.)

You sound busy, but I have someone very techie, not me, who will help me code the categories. (I would not use yours, just the general idea, if that’s ok w/ your copyright?) Please let me know!

You would be helping a young mom/writer immensely whose trying to start a new life. Thank you! :) My email addy is on my site. I’m tired this early, but will look to see if you posted your email addy.

    hi megha,
that name is so good..my cousin has the same name… i came to your blog via http://superstarksa.blogspot.com to which i went via http://quatrainman.blogspot.com.
Your site looks amazing. Could not believe it is in blogger. I love the colour and every other asthetics.
Then I saw the categories, again checked whether it is blogspot. Bcoz I am running away from blogger to wordpress just for one main reason “Categories”. You have brilliant categories and voila a post and voila voila a poem there!! the icons , the wiki for the date, the quote on the top (Einstein is my fav quoter) and the title..are all so superb. I walk around many blogs but hardly stay back to write a comment..but this is too good :)
But by the way, as Chugs suggests, i t is a pain to manually handle categories..give wordpress a try..am sure you will come up wtih much better things there.

[Lady in R3d] Sorry about the inordinate delay in replying to your query. I’ll drop you an email or a comment on your site and answer your questions there. Do I understand this correctly - you want to use the JavaScript i’ve written to create your own categories?

[RK] I am glad you liked my blog enough to stop and leave a comment and hope you will visit often. And I am planning to switch to Movable Type in the not-so-distant future, so hopefully this whole categories business will be a lot easier there. I’ll be sure to check up on Wordpress too to see if it works for my needs. Thank you for the idea and do come by again :)

ps .. Sorry about the delay in responding to your comment. Being on an older blog post, it slipped my mind to write back. Apologies.
