The Paploo Stud-Wannabe

Julie Julie Julie, tu ladki nahin maamooli

All those who cringed at the image that song brought into their heads, please accept my heartfelt sympathies. And all those who are blissfully unaware, and thus have the smiles on their faces intact, consider yourself blessed. This is a song from Aaja Meri Jaan (1993) starring the inimitable Cushion Kumar. Imagine a pincushion, for starters. Or better yet, a whoopee cushion. I considered starting this post singing O Kreeeshnaaa yewww aaa da greataste mewzeeshan aaaf theees worrulldd from Meera Ka Mohan (1992) but no amount of mistyping can do justice to Kumar Sanu’s fine accent. Damn, I should be audioblogging.

So why am I hell bent on ruining your happiness with songs like this? You see, I had a most disturbing realization thanks to my last post. Apparently more people have watched Geeta Mera Naam (2000) than Johny Mera Naam (1970). At least the levels of excitement in the audience, about the respective genres seem to suggest that. Three paragraphs I dedicated to Jewel Thief (1967) and mentioned Avinash Wadhawan in passing. And yet. Tsk tsk. The commentspace of the previous post stands a firm testimonial to the fact that it is people like us who are responsible for that fine specimen of manhood — the PSW — the Paploo Stud-Wannabe.

We may cringe at the mention of their names, vehemently deny knowledge of their existence, but mention Bahaar Aane Tak (1990) and we turn into a classroom of seven-year-olds, jumping up and down, excitedly recollecting Rupa Ganguly’s parandha. Why? What makes us remember these PSWs with their cuts on eyebrows, funny sideburns, 80mph hairstyles and their moments of fame? Why do we recollect Prithvi crooning dil jigar nazar kya hai, main to tere liye jaan bhi de doon to a bunch of shrieking girls on screen, when someone mentions Dil Ka Kya Kasoor (1992), although a sum total of 5.5 people went to the theatre to see this movie? (0.5 = fell asleep half-way) Why do we remember people that we’d ordinarily be glad to forget about? Why do we get nostalgic about a lot of things that we weren’t so tickled about the first time around?

The answer lies in the memories. A final evening spent with high-school friends before you all moved to separate towns. A movie you watched with someone special. A heroine that reminds you of that gal in college you had a crush on. A hot summer evening spent sipping Rasna and watching Chitrahaar with mom and dad, while the cooler with the khus perfume ran in the background. The time Jagjeevan Ram died and a week’s mourning was declared resulting in all shops being closed, and you watching the same movie twice daily, on six consecutive days. The oily samosas of Sangam movie hall. The magical escalators at Abhinav theatre. It’s the personal associations, the feeling of nostalgia .. that lets us view the Rajan Sippys and Sahil Chaddhas of the world with a soft-focus lens.

But whatever our excuses, we have all done it. For the sake of old crushes and new loves, for the sake of friends and special moments, or simply for the lack of choice, we’ve been there. Gone to the theatre, paid good money for tickets, and watched with rapt attention while shape-shifting snakes morphed into humans in tight salwar kameezes and transparent kurtas and sang songs in the voices of Anuradha Paudwal and Mohammed Aziz. The all-problem-causing rain song, no less. Innocent heroine singing. Villian sees the heroine, lusts after her, pulls a Shakti Kapoor on her and kills her, compelling her to come back in another janam to reunite with her hero. Hero in the meantime, turns back into reptile-of-choice to wreak havoc on mankind. The only way to stop his rampage is for the lovers to unite. And unite they do. But alas, it is too late. Three hours, seven Gulshan Kumar T-Series songs, forty seven violins in the background and one hundred eighty-four extras in colorful dupattas later, you have walked out of the theatre with a death wish. Unless of course the audience is me. Who eagerly scanned the local newspaper pages looking for the sequel to Laal Dupatta Malmal Ka (1988).

did anyone tell u that you ROCK…

my memories of yore extend beyond the “these PSWs with their cuts on eyebrows” sumeet saigal types…

    it also included…

“kya majli ki shaadi hogi?, kya nanhe ko kaam milega? dekhenge agle hafte… hum log”…

“chann pakaiya, chann pakaiya… chann ke upar something something”

score counting of arrow hits on ramayana, mahabharata etc… that used to be great fun too…

    let me re-iterate… you ROCK

Isn’t that the next line? Ok, so that did tug at nostalgia strings. And it did bring back memories of high-school crushes…and of me crying into a pillow cos’ they thought I was the Invisible Man.

Isn’t that like too many Hindi movies for a South Indian Girl? Or may be, it is just my family that is strange. Like when I pitch to my mom on getting her to come for a Hindi movie, it is usually something like, ‘Amma, this has music by A R Rehman or song sung by Hariharan!’ Parochial family… will most certainly go to hell. *Sigh*

I always thought ‘O Kreeeshnaaa yewww aaa da greataste mewzeeshan aaaf theees worrulldd’ from Meera Ka Mohan (1992) was a handiwork of the great Bhappi da.

Tsk, Tsk, someone has to feed the kids of the producers, na ??

*Sigh* everyone can remember a great Big B movie, only a genius can spout the dialogues, songs, lyrics and assorted trivia of a KK (Kishen Kumar) movie :)

btw, is it a happy coincidence or not that Bappi da has been instrumental in the music of several of these classics ! I can truly say that without Bappi da’s inspiration, my MS would never have been completed. It was also a chance to chase everyone away from the lab once I started playing “Pyar bina chain kahan re”

“Slunking in corner again”, might get beaten up my Megha for starting a totally unrelated thread !

No, no, no…..IMHO, you have it all wrong. Whooppeee Cushion - which is a brilliant name for him - had his best music in Papa the Great - his ‘comeback’ vehicle. Makes one wonder, that word ‘comeback’……

And did you actually watch Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, AND the sequel - ‘Phir Lehraya Lal Dupatta’? Sahil, if I remember right? He graduated to those movies from playing the rapist/serial killer in these Gujju movies, which used to screen in the DD Sunday afternoon regional movie slot!! Co-incidentally, those were 2 movies I never saw. Heard the music and thought it was quite good, though. Yes, we all have to make these admissions of guilt, out here on the Net where no one knows us.

    Outstanding post!

True. The good movies you watch quietly and enjoy. The bad ones you can screw around with. I recall watching this dud called Kitne Dur Kitne Pass with my roommates (one of whom rented this sorry flick and announced to us, “iski g&*$@ maarte hain”) and we laughed as hard as we did when we watched Hera Pheri, even though we barely said a word during the latter and barely heard a word during the former.

[Sriram] Be proud of the bad movie watcher you are, I always say. Why hide? And some words of wisdom for the first commenter - The early bird gets the worm, but it is the early worm that gets eaten :)

[Priyavadan] Nice or not, I do remember songs from it that played ad nauseam on Chitrahaar - kya karte thhe saajna tum humse door rehke, a Anuradha Paudwal and Udit Narayan number and suni suni akhiyon mein which had the same tune as the Jai Santoshi Maa (1975) title song. Okay, that’s more information that you could ever care to know, so I’ll stop :)

[blogman] I’ve been told that I give the impression of being a 3-year old, and being 3, I’m too young and impressionable to argue with that ;) I presume from your comment however that you’re thinking that all these theatres are in Hyderabad, which they are not, which might explain why you haven’t heard of them. Sangam was in Delhi and Abhinav in Bangalore. Yes, I’ve had quite a nomadic childhood :)

[sanky] Wait, what is this? Where did I mention wet saree? This post was about paploo guys, and THEY are the ones in transparent kurtas. Okay, granted I said salwar kameezes too. But yes, since you mention it - the rain song was definitely a multipurpose tool of story telling. Luring the villian, distracting the hero, uloo banaofying the villians so hero can plants bombs in villians den, showcasing free-spirit of heroine while hero secretly watches and falls in love with her, celebration of love .. and so much more!

By the way, I lovvve the Lamhe number, and the name connections have nothing to do with it :)

[rumpelstiltskinâ„¢] Ah TV serials! That’s a topic for an whole different post, so I won’t go into it in this commentspace and be unfair. But you sure brought back a ton of kidhood memories of Hum Log, Buniyaad, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Ados Pados .. the list is endless :) And thank you! Always good to know I’m a rock ;)

[Manoj] Bingo! That is the very song! Meera Ka Mohan with music by Arun Paudwal (Anuradha Paudwal’s late husband) has a couple of other songs which were reasonably decent, the most famous of them being the title number - toone preet jo mujhse jodi maine lok laaj sab chhodi. Aww, think about it, wouldn’t you rather be Invisible Man than be a PSW? :)

[Vignesh] I shall simply offer you some tissue and a sympathetic pat for the deprived childhood you had :)

[Anurag] Wet salwaar kameezes actually, since you’re in the process of a wardrobe overhaul :)

[loverBoy] Yes, I was the 0.5 ;) Glad you liked post!

[Kedar] The origin of this phrase lies in my obsessive need to come up with a label/name for everything. Glad bulb chamkoed! :)

[Closet Claustrophobic] That’s like too many bad Hindi movies for anyone, period :) But it was a very potent combination of spending a fair part of my childhood away from the south combined with parents who became avid Hindi movie watchers after living in Mumbai for many many years. I can give you scary statistics of just HOW many Hindi movies I watched with my folks, but i’ll try and resist ;)

[He who Shall Not be Flamed] Firstly, I love the Voldemort-y new ID/avataar. Much coolness. Secondly, Tanya Singh went on to marry Cushion. Hope that does not break your heart and all. Thirdly, embarrassment kaiku? Garv se kaho hum paploo movie watcher hain! (Ye Garv kaun hai aur us-se kyon kahein?)

[Rohan] It is so wonderful to see how the PSW actually helped served as an inspiration in your life. Total heart-warming it is, I tell ya! I haven’t done a head count, but going by the fact that nobody has said anything about Geeta Mera Naam (2000) so far, I think it is safe to say that Johny Mera Naam (1970) is still in the lead, so you can heave a sigh of relief :)

Nah, Meera Ka Mohan has no Bappi connection. Music by Arun Paudwal (Anuradha’s late hubby) and sung by Kumar Sanu and Anu-bai.

[Hokie] True that .. *nods head solemnly*

You are welcome to start all the threads you want, no worry :) But Bappi is another topic that deserves a post all by itself, so I will not do injustice to him by talking about him in the commentspace. But if you are ever looking to chase people away in the future, I can think of more effective Bappi examples that will get the job done in 1/10th the time that pyaar bina chain kahaan re took :)

[Nandu] Boo hoo! I haven’t heard the soundtrack of Papa the Great! That’s one of the classics that I missed, it seems. And yes, I DID watch Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, but sadly, missed the sequel. Both movies starred Sahil Chaddha and Veverly (who never showed up in any movie after that though, did she?) And guilt? Gulty as charged, but no guilt. All pride :)

[Anonymous] Ah yes, well said! I tend to describe the two categories as -

    1. Movies you laugh with
    2. Movies you laugh at

And yes, I have seen Kitne Door Kitne Paas as well. Sigh.

    [Mustang]

    1. If you are referring to Kumar Sanu’s accent being similar to Bappi’s, then yes, he surely made him proud. But you do know MKM is Arun Paudwal’s music, I hope?
    2. Haven’t seen Papa the Great. Am having major deprivation symptoms now. Shall ask my unkilji tomorrow.
    3. Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein (pronounced with emphasis on the double-R in Terre) EEKS! I know a lot of my friends who are goo-goo-eyed about darling Maddy but in my books Madhavan IS a PSW.
    4. A female version of a PSW is a PBW. That’s Paploo Babe-Wannabe, in case you wondered.
    5. Yaad Rakhegi Duniya. Shudder. I have it from reliable sources that this is a remake of Mani Ratnam’s classic Telugu film, Geetanjali. Aditya Pancholi. Double shudder.

Aah ! another post catering to the audience yearning to learn more about the lesser known(or rather less talked about) studs and movies and songs. So what we got here ? Dil ka kya kasoor !! and u say Prithvi ? the cat eyed dude ?? Now definitely u can’t miss the dude when u think of the song, but then its divya(*RIP*) we like more, don’t we ??

I kinda like the “Oh Krishna” song hehe..and some other Hinglish songs like “Rain is falling chamaa cham cham”. Since a long time I was trying to remember the title song from this movie called “Jiyaala(1998)” (The ad went something like this ..Jiyalaa - The Daring), you just have to watch the songs to believe it !! laugh riot :). On that note, a string of movies have been released with english dictionary meanings added to the title(“Bollywood movie titles for the dummies” style). A sampling -

    Dhund - The Fog (2002)
Nigehbaan - The Third Eye (2005)
    Lakeer - Forbidden Lines (2004)
Double Cross - Ek Dhoka (2005)
Tezaab - The Acid of Love(2004)

Not sure why they do it, for style ? or to make the title “understandable” to the folks at the Academy awards ? If its the second case then what about the one mile movie titles like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge ?? hmm.. The Dilwale take away the Dulhania ?? , now a cucious mind would think - if Dilwale walk away with the Dulhania then what about the Doolha ?? :p

[Swathi] Oh my .. I never imagined finding someone who knows more Meera Ka Mohan songs than I do! Yes rab jaisa roop tumhaara is definitely a classic compared to some other songs of both past and recent times. But beliya dil se mila le dil, just chill chill, just chill chill is a very useful song to annoy people so it has its merits, methinks. The other day I met someone who was rather agitated and hassled and to tell them to take it easy, I sang this song instead. Choice words were muttered as a result :)

[phatichar] I have been made aware of this variation just yesterday, and sadly I cannot get rid the images it puts in my head, of both Sonu Nigam and Cushion Kumar singing about their pajamas. I assure you, it is a tough choice to decide which image is more disturbing.

[loverBoy] I only quoted, so no credit to me. But yes indeed, it’s a nice one! :)

And it is precisely because of the 0.5 method of movie-watching that I have managed to watch all these movies and still retain my sanity. We are pretending that I have some left, of course.

[scorpigle] I blame Chitrahaar more than anything else. The songs of the movies is what made them classics, bringing PSWs into our living rooms and our lives :)

Nice to have you drop by! And glad to have wasted your work time :)

[pingoo] Yes, fortunately Dil Ka Kya Kasoor reminds one of the sweet innocent Divya Bharati as much. The title song of this movie, is one I actually used to like and hum. Aashiqui mein har aashiq hota hai dil se majboor. Some lame story about a terminally ill poetess in love with a singer/dancer who sets her poems to tune and sings them. Thank heavens I don’t remember any more of it.

I like O Krishna too ;) In a very I-am-in-the-mood-to-make-my-ears-pay-for-their-sins kind of way. Nah, I just kid. I actually own the entire Meera Ka Mohan soundtrack (Yikes, now that is a scary thing to admit in public) and there are a few other songs that I like as well — tune preet jo mujhse jodi, mere liye zaroori pyaar tera and my favorite - jab jab tujhko dekha dil mastaana ho gaya - a very peppy and upbeat number picturized on Ashok Saraf! Heavens! :|

Speaking of hyphenated Hindi film names Daag - The Fire is one of the earliest in the ‘A the B’ series that comes to mind. Someone had a theory once that this movie was originally The Aag - The Fire perhaps, and someone converted ‘The Aag’ to ‘D’aag’ :)

And about DDLJ - I remember two summers ago, TCM had a Bollywood special where they screened 12 Hindi movies in a month. DDLJ was one of their choices and was introduced as - The braveheart will take the bride! I promptly imagined Mel Gibson instead of SRK going ‘Bade bade deshon mein chhoti chhoti baatein .. ‘ ;)

[He who Shall Not be Flamed] You shall henceforth be acronymized. You have been warned.

O Krishna is on my playlist since yesterday and refuses to leave. See, don’t you feel better now? I remember Tanya Singh in a silk sheet. I don’t know why, but I do. Don’t remember song though. An album called Dhadkan, I think? On a side note, I hear she is the daughter of C-grade music director Ajit Singh, who I think did music for a couple of Ramsay Brothers movies.

[Hokie] Hmm, you want a list eh? Or as Sunidhi croons in Dhoom - You want more? Are you sure? Oh-kay! Adding to [pingoo] and your lists —

First my favorite. I love the pun in this one! :)

    Charas - A Joint Effort (2004)

    And now the rest —

Taarzan - The Wonder Car (2004) (this I can understand. They had to distinguish themselves from Hemant Birje, after all)
    Insaaf - The Justice (2004)
Zameer - The Fire Within (2005)
Samay - When Time Strikes (2003)
I - Proud to be an Indian (2004)
    Jaal - The Trap (2003)
Lucky - No Time For Love (2005)
    Matrubhoomi - A Nation Without Women (2004)
    Tum - A Dangerous Obsession ( 2004)
    Shart - The Challenge ( 2004)
Tango Charlie - The Heart of a Hero (2005)
Waqt - The Race Against Time (2005)

And finally the movies in the A the B format with Hindi in the B part as well.

    Chaahat - Ek Nasha (2005)
Rules - Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula (2003)
Jaani Dushman - Ek Anokhi Kahaani (2002) (a priceless treasure I have had the pleasure of seeing TWICE!)

Boy, was that a waste of time or what! :)

[FunnyCide] Welcome to the madhouse that is this blog :) Hope you like it here! And yep, gulty as charged :)

[Megha]: On a serious note, noting that you have mentioned Charas - A Joint Effort (2004), you should perhaps watch Haasil (dunno if its one of those A the B format movies :p )! Same diro - Tigmanshu Dhulia. In fact Haasil was his debut. Within six months the guy was turned, all the good work was undone and he came out with Charas! Eeeks…

[aNTi] I’ve heard from other sources as well that Haasil is a pretty decent flick. You recommend watching it eh? I remember it has a nice Abhijeet solo in its soundtrack that I like - aakhein bhi hoti hai dil ki zubaan .. one of Jatin Lalit’s better romantic numbers of 2003, IMO. Takes me back to their Yes Boss, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman days somewhat.

Haven’t seen Charas either. Just like its punny name :)

[He who Shall Not be Flamed] Yes, Tanya appeared in a couple of videos. I remember being particularly traumatised by ‘Woh Beete Din Yaad Hain’ and ‘Kuch Hone Wala Hai’.

[Megha] Quick question - how, how is it possible to own a Meera Ka Mohan tape without paying for it? Unless a friend gave it to you as a gift, in which case, you should really re-examine your friend’s tastes in music! And, ‘Garv se kaho - Gaurv kaun hai…’ was an outstanding one….:)

[FunnyCide] Oh yes, I agree completely! All the Kishen Kumar fans that exist in the world are all right here, in this commentspace. And i’m glad you decided to join in the madness :)

[VC] Paploo remains paploo, in my opinion. However the female equivalent of a PSW is a PBW - a paploo babe-wannabe :)

[Nandu] Remember in an earlier post I talked about ‘accidentally’ leaving the Aaja Meri Jaan tape at a friend’s place and how said friend and I are no longer on talking terms? Rather similar to that, a friend (different friend) left MKM with me and now refuses to take it back. I however, am still on talking terms with friend. So it is my own music tastes that are in question, I guess :) And thankoo. I was quite pleased with the ‘Garv se kaho‘ thing myself :)

To ur credit u beautifully sidestepped the question but thnx for reminding me of good old Sangam which provided the perfect opportunity to bunk school and walk over to the hall :-)

Hey this is completely unrelated but recently I found this number ‘Aaja meri Jaan’ crooned by SP. Does it belong to that duh Kishen Kumar movie coz it wud be absolutely criminal to waste such a beatiful number on him.

[Swathi] No no, that was simply a list of hyphenated movies, I didn’t say they were all bad (or good for that matter). There are movies in that list, that I actually found decent, as well! As for a blog about MKM and its songs - do you think anyone other than you, me and perhaps [FunnyCide] would want to read it? :)

[Rohan] Ah, your school was opposite Sangam? Cool! I don’t remember Delhi that vividly, so you have to help me out here - which school was this?

And yes, the SPB number aaja meri jaan is from the Kishen Kumar movie of the same name, so you can start shedding tears. Here’s what I said about it in my previous comment (cut and paste) - The title song aaja meri jaan is an R D Burman composition, the lone saving grace of an otherwise deplorable soundtrack. A beautiful composition woven around RDB’s favorite jalpari theme, it is said to have moved SPB to tears when he recorded it.

But for this one, given my little knowledge of oldie Hindi movies, the commentspace is more interesting than the post itself! What with your readers’ funny comments and your equally funny replies! I particularly liked your list of, as you call it, hyphenated movies.

Of the new ones, I could think of the following:

    Anjanee - The Unknown
Aryan - Love Story with a punch
Divorce - Not between husband and wife (huh?)
Rehguzar - The road to destiny
    Yagna - Fire that heals

(all these are yet to be released)

    Well, keep the bandwagon playing!

[the greatest hokie ever] Not to be confused with “Kudrat ka Kanoon” (1987), which was a relatively famous movie with Jackie and Hema.
“Kudrat ka faisla” was supposed to star Sunny and Neelam. Soundtrack got made, movie was never released.

[megha] Thanks. To be frank, my knowledge of crappy Hindi movies is rather miniscule and restricted to 1991-95. (Inspector Dhanush, Nambri Aadmi, Pratigyabadh, anyone?)

  55. Megha · Other comments for this name · Other comments for this URL

[HWSNBF] Hmmm, Sunny-Neelam-Bappi. Somehow that combination brings to mind a different movie (perhaps the same production house as KKF?) - Paap Ki Duniya (1987) - most famous for the song - chori chori yoon jab ho aankhein chaar kya hota hai, a rehash of the Bangles hit - Walk like an Egyptian. I have to admit that Kishore spirited singing makes this song a favorite of mine, despite it being a copy and all. And Neelam’s dhoti-kurta which was such a fashion rage in those days. And of course the Lata-Shabbir senti-fest - bandhan toote na saari zindagi.

Pratigyabadh and Numbri Aadmi ring a bell as Mithun movies, both with Bappi music, I think? The former was a B R Chopra production I believe, the latter I dunno.

I don’t recall Paap Ki Duniya, but then the only time in my life when I was heavily into movies like these was between ‘90-’95. Before that, i was too young and in the UK and afterwards, I went away to college.

Yes, PB and NA are Mithun-da classics. And the wonderful Sangeeta Bijlani (may Azhar be cursed forever!) starred in both NA and Inspector Dhanush (which was actually a pretty good movie with Suresh oberoi, watch it sometime).

Talking about Mithun, do you remember the name of the Madhuri-Mithun movie that had a song that went “Sheeshe ki umr pyaar ki..aakhir something something”. the tune is stuck in my head, but I can’t remember the name.

There was also Pyaar ka Devata. But you are right. The song i was referring to is from Prem Pratigya. Visions of Mithun-da throwing a glass bottle on the floor, because he thinks Madhuri has betrayed her, and belting out large doses of senti.. from what i recall, Mithun-da is a local dada, and he saves Madhuri from some other goons who are trying to molest her, and falls in love with her.

    *Dazed, but alive nonetheless*

    *at least, still alive*

Good lord, what is this blog turning into?!

Unfortunately, I only have the following to contribute to this discussion (for lack of another term, and at the risk of sounding like a kindergarten student in a class for PhD students) -

    Remember Love ‘86? Starring Rohan Kapoor - {I believe his name in the movie was ‘Omi’}. :) {Of course the movie also starred Govinda, Neelam, and Farha but they were not exactly PSWs, even if they should have been :) }

Unfortunately, (or is that fortunately), I don’t remember anything about the movie except one scene where mom-in-law-to-be puts a boombox with a child’s voice inside a Godrej Almirah and locks it up, to expose the lock-picking capabilities of the grooms-to-be.

    Hmmm.

Quite sad, I think, considering I remember seeing a lot more of those Chunkey Pandey type flicks.

And now that Mithun-da has been mentioned, I can bring up that other “Julie Julie” song, starring that great hero of heroes {remember, that a bullet passed through his head taking the brain tumour with it, leaving him cured - or was I reminded of that piece of trivia on this blog? hmmm, highly probable, I think :) } -

    Julie Julie,
Johnny ka dil tum pe aaya julie
    Tere liye chad jaaun soolie
Tu hi to meri jaan hai jaan hai jaan hai jaan haiiii

:) And now this kid shall get back to the back of the class :)

The Reema Laagoo filled 90’s movies are in itself difficult for most of the mankind to recollect ,and here u r forcing junta to recollect absolute masterpieces of an era which most of us didnt know existed.

I recollect in amusement a song from Krantiveer(’94) wherein Nana Patekar romances our very own Bindu(Love rap).It was probably the first love raps to which the Big B has suddenly taken a liking singing in every ad,movie and galli mohalla for that matter.

    It went something like..
“Kabhi shambar ek Kabhi Shambar two , hua love fever shuru…jao jao jaldi jao doctor ko bulao …nawz dikao mera….”

and nana patekar actually mouthing the queen’s language wid stuff like
“baby u r old wine” lol.

[rumpelstiltskinâ„¢] The ‘Zebra’ and ‘Hippo’ movies would have been made, had the SPCA not intervened. The idea of a ‘Zoo’ post is most exciting, but I highly doubt I can do justice to someone like Mithun. Firstly the man has too much output - unlike the Avi-Wads and Sum-Saigs of the world with 5 dismal movies in their lifetime, Mithun has 5 dismal movies every quarter. Secondly, I haven’t seen *enough* of them to .. *ahem* educatedly analyze and dissect them :)

I continue to be happy to know that one see shades of Manoj Kumar (Patthar Ke Sanam (1967)) and Salman Khan (Pathhar Ke Phool (1991)) in me ;) And surely you don’t think someone would teach this nonsense? Although, now you’re giving me ideas to start a cult of my own! Hee haw! *evilly grins and rubs hands in glee*

[Anonymous Fan] I wish I could, but as long as I remain with Blogger.com I am restricted by their features, so I cannot :( Hopefully i’ll make the shift to my own domain someday soon! Nice to see a fan drop in, even if anonymous :)

[pingoo] Ah yes, the tota-maina song, how could I forget that. Most-est irritating, if you ask me. But then again when was Chunky not irritating? Maybe to a small extent in Tezaab (1988). And never refrain from mentioned a PSW, or else it’ll come back to haunt you sooner than you think :)

[Rajesh] Glad to see you survive the .. um .. whatever you want to call this thing :)

Rohan Kapoor is a unique species in that he is a second generation PSW. Let me clarify. This does not mean his dad is a PSW. It simply means he is the son of a famous film persona who tried to use daddy-dear’s fame to overcome his own PSW-ness. Rohan Kapoor was the son of the famous singer Mahendra Kapoor. Now MKaps himself was a staunch B R Chopra loyalist, so it was natural that beta and made his debut under the Chopra baton, which he did (although BR and Yash had split by then) with Yash Chopra’s Faasle (1985) which also debuted Farha. Intesterestingly Love 86’s other three stars did reasonably well, but Rohan Kapoor fizzled out soon after, starring in a couple of films with Neeta Puri before disappearing completely. I’ve heard he played anchor to a music-related TV show along with his dad later?

Another example of a second generation PSW would be Raj Tandon, son of the filmmaker Ravi Tandon, and brother to Raveena Tandon. Ravi Tandon’s arguably most famous movie being the Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh starrer Khel Khel Mein (1975) and perhaps the most famous song from this R D Burman soundtrack being ek main aur ek tu donon mile is tarah, he decided to launch his son in a namesake movie - Ek Main Aur Ek Tu (1986) with Rubina, who was the actress Ranjeeta’s sister. The only worthwhile thing about this movie is its music by R D Burman, who daddy Tandon was loyal to.

And Julie Julie! If you can remember this song, then you are no back-of-the-class kid! :) This musical delight is from Jeete Hain Shaan Se (1988) with music by Anu Malik.

[IdeaSmith] I have no clue about this song, and from the sound of it, I should thank my stars about it. Do educate us. Wherefrom is this masterpiece? The movies that come to mind starring the two of them are Khauff and Kartoos, but i’m sure there are more! By the way, nice to see you drop by here and leave a comment :)

[Mantri] As some wise man once said ‘those who forget history are condemned to repeat it‘. This is something like that :) Btw, I haven’t seen Krantiveer but I have watched this song on TV. And Hindi songs being interspersed with English lyrics. That’s a whole different rant worth a blog of its own! Nice to see you drop in to leave a comment :)

[HWSNBF] See, I stayed away from both the Mithun-Madhuri delights, so i’ve fortunately missed this glass-bottle-on-floor moment.

You suffered some of my archives? My sympathies. Oddly enough you are the third person to have asked about an IIT connection after reading my blog. Nopes, no IIT lineage. I have a close friend who went there though. Why do you ask?

[HWSNBF] Yay, another potential mondegreen! I haven’t heard this song, but just from what you’ve quoted, i’m guessing the lyrics are likely to be ‘toota jo ghar kisi ka to hairat ki baat kya‘ :) Your version of the lyrics of the second line are rather .. interesting .. though. Especially since the whole drinking theme goes well with ‘ras’ :)

Hmm, about the IIT thing, perhaps there is something that is apparent to others that is not so apparent to me, so I won’t question it anymore :)

[HWSNBF] I have got to share this. After that lil lyrical mishap of yours, I went hunting for the Prem Pratigya song to confirm, found it and listened to it. But that wasn’t the best part. What was most howlarious was that there was a site that allowed you to download a ringtone of the song! Who WHO, on God’s green earth would want sheeshe ki umr pyaar ki as their ringtone? Um .. do you?

Um, no :) That would be going too far. I’m not exactly a huge fan, its mostly about nostalgic associations and vivid memories from a long ago phase in life.
I missed Tezaab and Madhuri’s earlier movies and PP was pretty much the first time I saw her, a movie seen in a small town, where I was visiting grandparents. For company I had G, friend, confidante and head-servant of the household. The movie hall had folding tin chairs.

[HWSNBF] Ah :) See, I would probably be willing to watch a Naagmani a second time just for nostalgia’s sake, so I figured it didn’t hurt to ask :)

I haven’t seen too many of the ‘tin chair, dabba theatre’ type of movies, but the ones I did, I still have fond memories of. Small towns, semi-functional fan making funny noises et al. So was Prem Pratigya G’s choice or yours?

[scorpigle] Ah! This is the Kalpana Lajmi film written by Bhupen Hazarika, where Mithun plays a priest?

my choice. the whole madhuri dixit thing. the fact there weren’t too many movies to choose from made it easier.
You can’t really have multiplexes with tin-chairs, you know. :)
I would watch Naagmani again just for “Mera laung Gavaccha”, and the ravishing Shikha Swaroop.

Paagal dil mera…tum se yeh keh raha….ab tho tere bina…raha jaye naa..
    aaja meri jaan…tumse hai pyar…aaja mere paas aa…mujhko churaaa…
unfogettable SP’s playback with typical southie accent…:)

[Paddy] I honestly don’t know where I come up with them myself, but if they work for you, then more power to them ;) Although I am very curious exactly what context the phrase resurfaced in your mind. Do tell :)

[Jammy] Oh my lord! Here is someone who actually knows the other songs of the movie besides the RD-title song! I am most impressed! And my heartfelt sympathies for starting your day on a Cushion Kumar note! :)

“Krishna You Are the Greatest Musician of this world” was a superhit songs. All the songs of Meera Ka Mohan were superhit. My favourite was “Zaaroori hai Mereliye Zaroorira Saason ko jaise hoti hai hawaaaaa”.

Another person said that they don’t remember the song “Julie Julie” from “Jeete Hai Shaan Se”. The song and the film was a hit. It had Mithun, Sunjay Dutt and Govinda. The song was “Julie Julie, Johny Ke Dil Tumpe Aaya Julie, Tere liye Mar jau Zooli, Tu Hi To Meri Jaan Hai Jaan Hai Jaan”.

Cushion Kumar(Kishen Kumar) is avery good actor. The only problem with him was that he looked different. I love the songs of all his movies like “Aaja Meri Jaan”, “Bewafa Sanam”, “Kasam Teri Kasam”, “Papa The Great”. He had also done one very good music video as a killer. The music and singer was M.M Kreem.

Do you all remem the songs of “Jaan Tere Naam”. The song was a national anthem “Yeh Akka India Jaanta hai kil eh dil tumpe marta hai. Dil kya cheez hai jaanam apni Jaan tere naam karta hai”

This site was one of the only links that came up when I tried searching for that song from “Jiyaala” that went “kal chaudhvin ki raat thi”. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have appalling taste in music, it’s just that no one believes any video could truly be as horrific as I describe. Has any of you actually seen it? Those people looked like they had fricking leprosy or something!! If anyone has a link to the video, please pass it on! :D

[Shruti] ‘wo beete din yaad hai’ is a remake of an old song from Horror Movie ‘Purana Mandir’ by Ramsay. The old version is really nice.Must try!!
As far as new version is concerned. it goes like this… Tanya Singh is in love with a guy. He dies in an Accident. she looks gloomy and Sad.
    Great Song though

im late.. really late to discover this blog. wish i cld have done it earlier. but its nver toooo late!!!

i know each and every, song, movie, starcasts, serials, etc that r being spoken here.
I remember, i was 5 wen the flick ‘Bahar aane tak’ was out. i was not allowed to watch it as it was considered to contain some adult content. but somehow heard these songs in the trailors of other T-series movies. lovely music it is.

Talking abt my Fav ‘lal Dupatta malmal ka’ and its sequel. its makes me really nostalgic. somehow after some struggle i’ve got both the CDs. feeling lucky!!

i wld like to add some more names- karishma kaali ka(Amrita singh, shatrughan sinha),ajooba kudrat ka(hemat Birje), hatim tai(Jitender, Sangeeta bijlani, amrish puri), raani aur laalpari
(reena roy, and various actors), nyaya-anaya(sumit sehgal, shilpa shirodkar), nache nagin gali gali(meenakshi sheshadri, nitesh bhardwaj who was Krishan in mahabharat) and the list goes on and on and onnnn….
