Ogbl Day

Tags:

Blog DayMuch link love has come my way today. It’s incredibly touching. Thanks Amit and Neha, you guys are the sweetest. This also got me to look at the calendar before it disappeared into the kitchen as Satish Kaushik elaborates in a song from Mr India (1987), and realize that today is 31st August. Which makes it Blog Day 2005. So happy Blog Day and all that celebratory stuff. Why 31st August? A pretty neat reason actually. The numbers 3108 if you look closely enough, (not that close, thank you) resemble the word blog. Of course we out here, living as we are in the land of we write dates the other way around just cos we can shall celebrate Ogbl Day instead (as Peter puts it.) But the spirit remains the same. Hic!

So what am I supposed to do about it, you ask? Simple — talk about five blogs you read and pass on the link love. Now, I read a lot more blogs than the ones on my blogroll (loud whispers of jobless character echoing in the background that she pretends to not hear), so I thought I’d highlight a few of those today —

Today is a day of self-validation for all bloggers. It’s like saying — Hey, we’re cool enough that they have a day set aside for us; we are no longer a bunch of weirdos pouring our thoughts into this vast cesspool. Yes I said cesspool rather than ocean, cos lets face it, a big part of the blogosphere does fall in the below-average to completely-dismal category.

But that is the beauty of blogging. Good or bad, everyone is just one Publish-button-click away from their moment of cyber-fame. Everyone has a voice, everyone is heard. And today is a celebration of a medium that allows us to indulge in the biggest fetish of them all — the exhibitionism of our mind.

Wow! First to comment on YOUR blog. That must either mean I am the first to bloghop here or others have decided to become not-jobless (jobful??) all of a sudden.

    Good one, as always!

Blog Day also?! How totally bizarre! Does anybody make money out of this I wonder? I suppose, its just an excuse to get new readers and amass many more comments, though god knows, that is one thing you don’t need any more of! :)
BTW, not meant to offend, I am noticing many of you star like bloggers, often talk about other not so star bloggers in that disparaging tone?
… not like my kind of writing
    … below average and dismal
… had tomato juice for breakfast sort of nonsense

To me it seems like, you are being unfair. Not all people are born equal, and in the Internet, one loser is as good/bad as another.

    [VC] Thankoo!

[Gabby] It is the Salmans and Naghmas amongst many other things that makes your blog such a wonderful place to visit. Keep them coming, Gabby! :)

[gvenum] thank you. And good grief about the BITS thing! I shall leave that question to be answered by our resident BITS-ian, Mr Sagnik Nandy :)

[almost_useless] Am glad you liked! Nice to see you drop by and hope you’ll visit more often! :)

[patrix] The pleasure is completely mine!

[Priyavadan] I think he did a post about that picture some time ago. Should dig it up from his archives and give it another read :)

[Stuti] No offense taken. But a couple of points to mention -

    1. At least half the blogs in the blogosphere HAVE to be below-average, by definition.

    2. Nobody said that the star-status of a blogger had any bearing on the quality of their writing. I can name five famous bloggers whose writing I think is dismal and five not-so-known bloggers whose writing I adore. Then again, I think star-status-ness is as much in the reader’s mind as it is in the blogger’s.

    3. You wrote - Not all people are born equal, and in the Internet, one loser is as good/bad as another. The entire point I made (in the last para of my post) was exactly about that. As I said - .. that is the beauty of blogging. Good or bad, everyone is just one Publish-button-click away from their moment of cyber-fame. Everyone has a voice, everyone is heard. Regardless of what they write, everyone is the same in the blogging world. That is the beauty of the medium.

    4. I don’t have tomato juice for breakfast. Am more of an orange juice person. Does that mean I look down upon all tomato juice drinkers? Are orange juice drinkers bigger celebrities? Topic for a separate blogpost.

[chappan] Ah, wonderful! This post was lacking some fine humor and your pondy PJ did the trick. My blog and I both thank you! :)

I sure hope your Blo-US idea takes off. And thank you for dropping by on my blog. Hope to see you around more often! :)

[uma] Thanks Uma. Always a pleasure to read what you write!

That really wasn’t the point I was trying to make.

All I am saying is, considering that it has been established beyond too much of doubt that you are such a fantastic (and star like) Blogger - you of all the people shouldn’t probably do this subtle putting down of others, who are not as good/ clever/ articulate as you are.

After all, not everyone is articulate, interesting and intelligent in the real world! And all said and done, the Blogworld is but a representative of this reality.

Oh and I missed the Orange juice theory, I am guessing it is some kind of sarcasm, but am missing it! May be when I read that post, it will make sense. :)

@stuti—I don’t quite agree your view that Megha was putting down anyone. I don’t think she ever said she was a star blogger at the first place. I am sure there are people who think her writing/ideas are inferior than others and consider below average. So the point of she undermining some blogs don’t hold.

    >>not everyone is articulate, interesting…..blogworld representative of this reality

Can’t disagree less. I have seen people again and again make presumptions about the personalities from blogs they write which is entirely wrong IMO. I can vouch that what I write in my blog is not entirely a reflection of my personality.
The word Below-average, IMO, is subjective . What is below-average for you is a brilliant blog for me. Guess enough said:)

Awesome. I first thought this was another of those memes. Later realised that it was not and I did a post myself and no, you are not on it :p

lol.. just joking. I wanted to highlight 5 blogs that I totally check out every single day, that had not been highlighted yesterday. And you had two ppl who turned their spotlights on you. Too much light spoils your eyes :D So actually did you a favor there.

But you know I am here whenver you post and you deserve a huge round of applause and a hug from everyone of us for making us smile and laugh and also letting us know about more avenues where we could find a few more laughs.

    So Blog on….

Chappan: You too. That PJ rocks!

Stuti: If you look closely (as I did after first making the same assumption as you), this is not a tag or meme. So the object is not to “get new readers”, but to send new readers over to someplace you enjoy.
There is a Tamil saying that when translated into English reads something like “Let the whole world experience the pleasure I am experiencing”. It is mostly used in a sarcastic tone, but this seems to be one instance it does have a positive tone.

    (Super long comment follows. Beware.)

[Jagan] Thank you! Happy blogging to you too. And nice to have you stop by! :)

[Stuti] Sigh, here we go again. First of all, you MUST stop taking what I write so seriously and look for all this hidden meaning in it. I am a self-admittedly flaky person and proud of it. Did the incessant watching and writing about crappy Hindi films and dedicated blog-posts for PJs not tell you anything about me? :) But here’s more babble on our current favorite topic -

    1. Again with the ‘subtle put-down‘. Firstly, I wasn’t being subtle. I stated rather clearly that a lot of writing in the blogosphere is below-average to completely-dismal. Secondly, there was no put-down of any sort. The comment wasn’t directed at any one person or group of people’s writing. With 100,000+ blogs in the blogosphere, it is natural for a large number of them to be bad.

    2. MY writing was never the yardstick for measurement of quality. A lot of what I write is sub-standard, while what is in my opinion some of my better writing, has been some of my least read/commented work. I didn’t say I was above all of it. I said it was a day of self-validation for all of US; WE are all contributing to the cesspool. WE all, not you all.

    3. You are giving me too much importance. I don’t think people give a damn what I think of their writing, in the first place. You have painted this air of ‘oooh, she’s a star-like blogger who is going around putting down other less star-like people’s blogs‘ when reality is more like - ‘she’s a blogger with an opinion, nobody else really cares what she thinks of their writing.‘ A lot of bloggers (regardless of their star status) think I’m a frivolous blogger and they unhesitatingly say so. I don’t write about any of the important issues. While there’s poverty, hunger and other matters of grave importance, I waste bandwidth writing about stupid Hindi movies that nobody watches and nobody should.

    4. It has been established that I am star-like? Oh-kay .. even if I don’t question the validity of that for a moment, this ‘establishing that I am star-like‘ precludes me from having an opinion and stating it? Or am I only allowed positive opinions? Now that the blogging standards committee has given me a ‘star blogger‘ badge, I have to start saying exclusively nice things about people, bloggers, Cushion Kumar, Nadeem-Shravan, Esha Deol et al? You are cutting off my oxygen, I tell you! You want me to be a politician and a diplomat, while all I am is a measly blogger.

Anyways, enough said. Time to retire this topic methinks.

[Nicks] Thankoo! And now now, let’s not compares apples with oranges :) Although I must admit, apple juice comes second in my list right after orange juice!

[karan] Since Blog Day is all about introducing your readers/commenters to blogs they might otherwise miss out on, it is as much Commenters Day, if you ask me :) And I’m glad you are one on my blog :) And I am still hopeful that you’ll give us that promised photoblog soon ;) Yes I know I know. You need to buy a camera first :)

[gvenum] Thank you for clarifying on my behalf! Am happy to know that I wasn’t misunderstood :) HBDTY!

[Pallavi] Great to have you here and hope to see you around more often! And thank you for your sweet words about my blog, both here and on Gabby’s blog! You have a great space yourself :)

[Twilight Fairy] Thank you! I just discovered your blog yesterday thanks to Gabby’s post and can’t wait to catch up on your archives! Just read pushp ki abhilasha and have a lump in my throat not to mention a whole host of memories from when I learnt the poem as a kid. Am glad you stopped by and I hope to see you around here more often! :)

[GREATBONG] The pleasure is entirely mine! And your Blog Day post was awesome! :)

    [pingoo] Thankoo thankoo! :) HBDTYT!

[samit] You are welcome! Well, you are also Samit, but I digress. The pleasure was all mine :)

[aNTi] *wipes tear out of the corner of her eye* Awww, see you made me feel all warm and fuzzy and mushy by being so sweet. I can’t be a smartass when you turn me into a blubbering idiot like this, can I? :) But a heartfelt thank you for what you said. You made my day and my week too. Being able to bring a smile to someone’s face is one of the bestest feelings in the world, and if I am able to do that, I think the purpose of my blog is more than served. Thank you for being such a regular reader and commenter.

And just when I think you cannot be any more kind and considerate, you raise the bar higher with your concern for my health and eyes ;) It’s a good thing you didn’t mention me, cos I didn’t mention you either and this way, I don’t have to feel guilty ;) Nah seriously, I thought i’d highlight people who were not on my blogroll instead, since the Broll ones already knew each others’ blogs quite well. By the way, I’ve been a follower of George’s blog from even before I started blogging (being a fellow RDB-phile as he is) and I discovered your blog through his! (At least I think I did.) Did I ever tell you that?

Happy Belated Blog Day to everyone out there!

[Megha] I promised myself I wouldn’t write another comment on your blog until I’d written at least one new post on my own blog. And of course, it’s sooo hard not to say anything here. So I quickly wrote a post on Blog Day too :)

And I agree with you about the cesspool thing. To add to your point about half the blogs out there being below average by definition, I think that the average blog out there is below average! (What? That didn’t make sense? Try reading it again. Not yet? *sigh* Forget it then)

And [Stuti], saying that is in no way putting down anyone’s blog. Like [Megha] says, that’s the beauty of the blogosphere. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t blog because they think they’re not good enough. People blog if they want to, and if they don’t blog, it’s because they don’t want to.

Everyone out there is a star blogger to someone. Some blogs get read more, and some blogs get read less. But everyone gets to say what they want to. Heck, even some pooping birds get press-coverage.

Have you ever read The dullest blog in the world? Look at the number of comments he gets. Look at the content and frequency of the posts. Star Blogger? Below Average? Both?

    :)

Oh btw, I had the Dullest Blog In The World on my blogroll for the longest time and still visit it from time to time! What a brilliant concept no? :) Very Seinfeld-y .. in the it’s a blog about nothing sense, I think.

[Mustang] Grr! You just had to be a smartass eh? :) You see, I have another secret unpublished blog where I put all my better writing. :) Since flogging a dead horse is always a lot of fun, I had to say something wrt the
interchange between Stuti, Megha and others. It seems like we have a regular political crisis unfolding:

[The Idealist]: The so-called blogosphere was intended to be egalitarian and justly so. Therefore such value judgments of “good” and “bad” are uncalled for.

[The Realist]: Whether you like it or not, some blogs are good and some suck in absolute terms. People can blog all they want but it is blindness to not call a dead-horse a dead-horse.

[The Relativist]: There is no such thing as absolute “good” or “bad” in the so-called blogosphere. It’s all in the eyes of the beholder ergo its all good.

[The Confused Instrumentalist]: I though blogs were means to an end. When it stops serving this end, people will just move on to the next-big-thing. Confused as to when and why these community-values snuck in?

    - The Passerby.

[aNTi] Ah! So our ‘first blogs’ were somewhat the same! And I had read Vinod’s Harry Potter post before, although I’m not sure how, cos his is not a blog I regularly follow. His post is of course a classic :) As a friend has recently taught me and I insist on saying much to the annoyance of people around me - Too cool only, da! Too cool only! (where the Too is pronounced as a short Tu.)

[Passerby] Ah brilliant! I think there can be a Realistic Relativist as well as a Pacifist (a achhe bachche jhagda nahin karte type uncle-person), but I think I better shut up now :) On a more generic note - people shouldn’t take what I write too seriously, I tell ya. Makes me want to break into song, and quote Salman Khan singing in the recent hit Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya - just chill chill, just chill complete with hand and hip movements and all.

Arrggh, its bad enough that I have an articulation problem. But, its worse when some million people get all excited about discussing medicocrity?! Hmmm.

Anyway, I am not the respresentative of the “Downtrodden Bloggers Club”, and hopefully will not need to make a career out of it either! :) I was merely making an observation, which I thought was the purpose of commenting on Blogs?

And the ’subtle put down’, was the previous post reference I am thinking. And don’t worry, I am NOT giving you too much importance. There are only a handful of people who are handicapped by that quality with respect to my life.

And I have no clue who the Esha Deol Blogger is or the other names that you mention, but if you are Salman Khan, is cool. I personally think, he is bit of an ageing star, but generally seems well preseved!

Anyway in case you or the sundry others I see are offended, my profuse aplogies be accepted. If no offence taken then may I add, The Dullest Blog link was super cool! :)

@stuti.. the first line about your comment is interesting “its worse when some million people get all excited about discussing medicocrity?!”
If you looked at the number of comments that post on the great Cushion Kumar got, you would realise that people *love* talking about mediocrity.
And please, nobody give me ones about how ‘Accha sila diya tuney mere pyaar ka’ was anything but mediocre. Infact, it was *so* mediocre that it appeals to the ear in a ‘once you hear it, the tune gets stuck in your mind’ kind of way.

Come on [Stuti] and [Megha]. Both of you have made tactical retreats so easily. I’m not trying to be a Shakuni-esque character attempting to fan the flames of discord (well, maybe just a little bit — nothing like a bit of discord to bring a little edge to things, what? ;)) but there is something to be said for this clash. I have persistently failed to wrap my head around how the conflict between these twp views could be amicably resolved.

After a nice 5-day break, I am back to annoy. Time to play catchup.

[Sriram] You are contributing to the cesspool. Well not just you, me too. Oh well, if I try to explain, I’ll just add more waste matter to the aforementioned cesspool, so I’ll stop :)

[Stuti] Ah, you are thinking! :) I am not usually in the habit of doing that, but I hear it is a most wonderful thing to do. And thank you. I function best when people don’t take my words too seriously. All is well and good in my world once again :)

[nithyananda] Thank you! Keep dropping by! :)

[HWSNBF] Hmph! I am badnaamofied for no reason at all :)

[Standerby/Passerby] While I love a good discussion with diagonal points of view as much as you do, there is not much merit in everyone saying the same thing over and over again. So I will have to grudgingly take away your source of entertainment :) On a more serious note, I don’t think there was a conflict in the first place. When two people actually have differing points of view, THAT is a conflict. This was more of a misinterpretation, IMNSHO :)

Interesting posts btw. Any reason why one doesn’t blog anymore? And hello fellow-Beantowner!

[Prahalathan] Arrey, you shouldn’t have removed the post. Just excerpting it would have been fine. But whatever you wish, it is your blog :) And a happy Blog Day to you too!

[karan] A-ha! Much cause for celebration that is! Awaiting the unveiling of the blog in the coming months. Yes I am the eternal optimist :) And me is happy to know that Gabby’s blog is such a hit. She is my soul sister if ever there was one. We hope to run towards each other in slow motion one day, singing yaadon ki baarat nikli hai dil ke dwaare type family songs and all. Of course, if she reads this, she will probably cringe :)

[phatichar] Hello hello. HBDTYT! Haven’t been inspired to write anything of late, but the deed shall soon be done! Good to see you around after a while! :)

[Sharanya] Ah, I feel better that the ‘they are saying the same thing’ has been noticed. Much thanks :)

Hmm .. singletons, blogs .. what next? Blogs about singletons perhaps? No no, pretend I did not say that, else history has a risk of repeating itself :)

[scorpigle] Too much action and drama happening in my life has resulted in no blogging at all. But coming soon .. to a blog near you :)

    [Rajesh] Arghhhhhhh! Et tu!

Fine. Sigh. Will write. About time I wrote anyway. 55 words hm? Hmmm..

[pingoo] Yes I do have the clip! But thankoo phir bhi. Awesome memories it brings back eh? I did a web search once for this song’s lyrics and stumbled upon this video on some Indian Student Association website :) Too cool na? I promptly downloaded it, of course :)

I had once done a school dance-drama type thing on this song .. so besides all the TV memories this clip brought back, I also have memories of a 10-year old jumping around in circles on stage, singing hind desh ke nivaasi while desperately trying to keep her mom’s saree from falling off her :) Sigh!

[pingoo] Arrey, I thought everyone already knew about it and I was the last one to discover it! Next time I find such gems, I shall promptly report them to you :)

There is more truth in your statement than you realize. I did successfully ‘pull off’ a saree when I was 10 :) It was everyone’s fortune that it did not happen until 90% of the show was over and when I finally hopped, skipped and tripped my way out of it, I was half-way off stage. Of course, my dear dad armed with his camera, has preserved the moment for my grandchildren to laugh at :)

yup those clips are really nostalgic. You can find many more old stuff at this site [many might not even have seen the light of the day]

I wanted to really comment about something… but the shear number of other comments discourage me.. I refuse to comment here.

BTW how are you doing? Not that I know how your were doing earlier, but that’s the whole point about asking that to “strangers” (Dont mind the univeral brotherhood crap). you never know what the hell can be the response.

[Nikhilesh] Well, I am glad you bit the bullet (not in the Mangal Pandey way though) and decided to comment. Hopefully the deed will be repeated in the near future?

And I am doing quite well, thank you. Now even if I were not doing particularly well, I would have still said so. Apparently this is the stock answer one gives to strangers, and since the question was asked as one, I figured I should reply as one too :)

Nice answer… straight and clear. Admitting the reallity that we are strangers, is sometimes so nice.

Today is a strange day. Every single communication I had today with any human being has been clear and straight. I’m probably going to resolve something in my workplace because of that, I offered the MTNLwala some bribe … straigth.. and it worked, I told a girl that she can do without me … again in clear fashion, I told an old friend that he is a jerk and he reciprocated, and then this comment … everything straight from the gut.
