Short Shorts : Two : Train of Thought

!
?
Hmm!
Huh?
Niiice!
Grrr!
*grin* Babe!
*scowl* Creep!

The inbound and outbound trains whooshed in onto the platforms from opposite sides.

(Written as part of the 55-word story tag from Rajesh. As this is my moment of sweet revenge, I pass it on to past tag-inflicters — Dharmendra, Kaashyapeya and Anshul as well as other bakras who I think will enjoy this — Sagnik, gvenum and Anurag. If you’d like to play this game of tag, holler and I’ll do the needful.)

[kumari] Thankoo! I have to guiltily admit that I am in the 0.4% of population who hasn’t seen the movie. And nopes, I haven’t watched Saathiya either. *goes and hides under a rock in shame*

[Priyavadan] Alaipayuthey (2001) is a Tamil movie starring Madhavan and Shalini, directed by Mani Ratnam. It was remade into Hindi as Saathiya (2002). Hope that helps :)

[Megha]: Whoa! no AP? No Sakhi? No Saathiya? Where were you? I dunno about the Telugu or the Hindi versions, but the Tam version, acc. to my sister, has the cutest lines.
The essential MR touch, ensuring tight lines with 4 words when the optimum is 6. The absolute gem - the scene when Karthik proposes to Shakti (the main protagonists)! Never have I heard such such lines!

That is the best short story, I ever seen written out of junk characters, seriously!. This story begs a “stand up applause”. Liked the title too:)

    Cool! Liked the setup. :)

And 21 words? Wow! You could fit two stories within the limit of 55 :) I think this one deserves to be called a short short short (or short^3)!

Of course, I’m extremely surprised not to see a Bollywood reference hidden there somewhere. Or did I miss it? :)

(Microsoft Word tells me the above comment is 51 words, not counting smilies and this sentence. Yaay!)

[Hokie] Hmm, I can see why they say not to mix comment writing and report writing :)

    [Priyavadan] :)

[Sriram] Don’t look at me expecting sympathy here! I didn’t crack a single PJ in this entire post. And I am darn proud of it too! It is a different matter that I had to restrain myself for only 23 words so it was a lot easier than usual :)

[aNTi] I was living under the same rock then that I am hiding under right now :| Seriously though, when I wanted to see the movie, the desi store uncle never had it (as in it was always rented out) and by the time uncle had it, I guess I had moved on to other movies and forgotten all about it. However, for fear of being lynched by angry commenters, I shall call uncle first thing tomorrow morning :)

[gvenum] Although I am not sure ’story out of junk characters’ is meant to be flattering, I’ll take it as a compliment anyway :) So thankoo much! And I was quite pleased with the title myself. Am glad you noticed it! :)

[Rajesh] Thankoo. Glad I could do justice to the ‘pro’s tag :) I like your Short³ name too! I now have devious idea for a story with less than 20 words, so I might have to steal your title and start a series ;)

[Harish] LOL! Now that was one classic comment! :) Glad you didn’t have to wait for the suspense ending for too long ;)

[Kumari] And I shall humbly await the speech, and sit in the audience like a good girl and get scolded when you finally give it :| :)

Is there a connection of this post with Alaipayuthe? I must be more dense than I give myself credit for. Considering I saw that and the Hindi version… and still don’t make the connect.

But, you really didn’t miss too much by not seeing the movie (s). Who needs sagas of triumphant mushy love anyway? Perpetuating incorrect myths in the name of creative expression is not good. Leaves a string of broken hearts. Kill Bill is decidedly a better genre that lends itself to mirroring real life.

And might I say, you have cheated. ‘Hmmm’ is equal to 3,54,000 words and ‘Huh’ is not too far behind! :) The Question Mark is not even a number that I can say. My brain, can’t process that much.

These short stories have a twist to it….I am not sure what people really understood and what you are trying to say but looks like every one here got the gist of it and liked it..so that’s good..but yea Kumari’s connexion to alaipayuthe seems interesting :).

Go watch the movie before all people come and bash you up lol ..just kidding :). I have cool memories interweaved with the “Alai payuthe” experience. Our class of about 55 boys and girls went for the movie…that being the last day of undergrad..as in last engg exam we wrote *sigh*.

Even today peepz at home were watching “Alai Payuthe” as I was leaving for work.

[Megha]: I am not sure how much Saathiya compares to the original Tam version. The fun in the movie is in the lines and I think the Hindi version did not have that crispness that Mani Ratnam is known for. Saathiya was just Shaad Ali’s interpretation of his guru MR’s masterpeice.

*coughs and innocently flexes his arm. Looks around to see if someone noticed him typing odes to what some might be term a chick flick*

[Primalsoup] Kumari sees one, and some others concur, but now you say you don’t, so I am not sure anymore. Will find out when I watch it :) And true that mushy glorified love sagas don’t need an extra viewer, but hey you are talking to a syrupy Bollywood addict here, so who am I to complain about corn and cheese! I will most obediently watch! And yesh, I am a follower of ‘when you have nothing profound things to say, say ‘hmmm!’ instead and look wiser than you are‘ :) You are not supposed to mention about it in public and kholofy my pol ;)

[Archster] Oooh clever. I like how you did the comment recycling thing :) And thank you! Nice to see you drop by. Do visit again!

[pingoo] I think that’s the beauty of most of these super short stories. They have room for multiple interpretations, so the audience comes away with multiple stories, in a way. Something I feel to be true about Gulzar’s poetry also. No no, I am not comparing MY story with Gulzar, I meant it in a more generic sense about multi-layered interpretations of the same writing :)

Hmm, you seem to have some major AP love going on at home and around you! :)

[aNTi] *we saw but pretended not to notice so the stud-dude aNTi image is very much intact in the eyes of the readers. in the eyes of MY readers that is. your readers lost it a loooong time ago when you posed for tulip photo and talked about the soft core of violent volcanoes* *howls and rolls with laughter all over again!* :D Sorry sorry, I couldn’t help that :)

Btw, DVD-supplying friend has promised to provide Tam version only. So hopefully .. :)

[Anurag] Goodie! The other animals of the jungle eagerly await it :)

[missnupur] Cool! Glad you decided to give it a shot :)

[kaashyapeya] Akka?! *choke* *sputter* All Indians are my brothers and sisters type funda?

I noticed post just yesterday. Neat coincidence! And why tag? Several reasons actually -

    a) It is the only way to get you to comment on blog
    b) It is the only way to make sense of what you write (your own blog is too high-funda so it doesn’t count)

Enough for now, I think? :)

I’ve seen the title song of Saathiya on some Zee TV Jhalkiya type program. Is beautiful indeed! Rani looks remarkably younger in it than in other movies of the same time, I felt. Did anyone else think so?

Oh that was Kumari’s keen piece of insight? I missed that. Then I suppose, it must be true. Clever Clever girl she is. She will do my neighbourhood proud someday!

Well too bad my thulping the movies haven’t had the desired effect. That’s what happens when you are in the minority, which is why it’s always smarter not to comment on the most popular blog around, because you will always be in the minority! :)

But lest you get me wrong and before the Mani Ratnam fan club takes me to task, I must confess that I have nothing against the said movie(s). For one, I am parochial enough to be most proud of our local boy Mani and his mostly acknowledged genius. Also, I think for a nano-second, I even swooned in all my girlie way at Madhavan’s-will-love-till-the-end-of-time thingie. But over time one realizes that such men are the most endangered species, and when one spots them they are anyway looking for Ms goody-two-shoes, girl-next-door types – which sadly you are not. (Not you, as in I am not… you know self-referential thinking aloud.)

So, now that I have got into this long winded messy loop of explanations let me stop!

And do enjoy the movie! I even have a friend from college, who debuts in the movie with a small bit part (which of course, you will miss, if you sneeze or blink)

And as an aside, your amazing patience in replying to all comments is quite something. Someday, you must give me lessons in such fine etiquette! I am tired of responding to the hate club that never goes away…

[anshul] Ah thankoo for explaining! Ironically I turned out to be the ‘houle se’ guy PSPO-ing about PSPO :) Much thanks for the gyaan!

[aNTi] I need to see this movie and get this bhoot out of my system pronto, at this rate :)

[Priyavadan] Yeah yeah. And I didn’t mean younger than other actresses. As I said, I thought she looked younger in Saathiya than she did in her other movies of the same time. But am pretty sure you are in the majority there with your preferences :)

[pingoo] Seriously! The accented desi talk used to irritate me, but when a kid says it, it sounds sooo adorable :) The other day she was telling me the tale of Lord Rrrrama, and I was doing my best not to howl with laughter :)

PJ Pingoo is dangerous, any time of the day! And what is this missus-wissus business? I thought one could get away with a lot more mis-interpretation and mis-understanding as a miss :)

[Primalsoup] Personally, I have no complaints about guys like Madhavan being an endangered species. I realize you are talking about the character he plays, but I am generally speaking about the dude himself. He irritates the crap out of me, so no matter how much I might like AP, there will be no swooning-over-darling-Maddy business. But escapist mush - always ready for it :)

As always, glad you commented. There is an inherent flaw in the if you comment on popular blog you will automatically be in minority logic, but I won’t go there :)

[Pallavi] :) Now you try one!

[R¥] Look who decided to stop by! :)

I know !! they best xplain kahanis :)…once my niece freaked out my cousins when she was two and a half yr old…cousins were playing with my niece…one of my cousin took out a cell phone and was showing her some screen saver..the lcd display had a chotu sa cheetah in a running action (like a gif..u might have seen it)

cousin - “cheetah odudu ma” (cheetah is running ma)
niece - *looks at the screen and looks at my cousin pointing her finger to the said cheetah* “adu baby jaguar..baby jaguar odudu”
cousin - :O *hand on mouth….like..aaauuuaa…she ran off to tell everyone*

I thought one could get away with a lot more mis-interpretation and mis-understanding as a miss :)

mis-interpretation and mis-understanding..how about misses then ?? (plural for miss…if you haven’t already got it :p)..yes yes pj pingoo is back after a good night’s sleep :).

[pingoo] So sweet :) I remember when my niece was about 3 and we showed her a stuffed toy version of a koala bear. My brother-in-law told her it was a ‘teddy bear’ and she promptly corrected him and said ‘dada .. its a koala!’. My brother-in-law fell off the couch in shock I think :)
