Moo

What is it they say about judging a person by the crackpots they hang out with? Here’s a conversation with friends. Apparently now, cows too have dialects.

Friend 1 (from Kanpur): <blah blah> .. and the cows would go maaaaaaaa.
F2: Must be a bhaiyya thing. Cows in Nagpur say hammmaaaaa.
Me: Andhra cows always say ammbaaaaaa. Unless they are out-of-towners.
F3: I remember a cow in my locality that went ammaaaaaa.
F2: Must be a part-bhaiyya part-Gult cow.
F3: American cows say moooooo though.
Me: They’re very fancy-shmancy. That’s why they wear jerseys.
F1: So when a desi cow comes to the US, does it start saying mooooo?
Me: You’re a desi gaai. You tell me?

And you thought *I* was from Crazyville.

“Mooo”…Looks like I am the first Cow home. Yipeee….sorry..moooo *with both my front legs up together and acknowledging* . I was not very fortunate to hear lot of Cows Moo back in desh but had fair share of listening to buffalos though.

Now I know, I should have looked for ammbaaaa than moo. Very informative!
*Unfortunately your blog friends are no better:)*

I’ve always mused about the English language and certain words that are just plain interesting. Most of these words are usually slang/urbanlingo/neologisms whose etymologies interest me a lot. “MOO”, albeit not fitting that description, was one of those words that I tried to find out more about while I was groping online [courtesy \megha for kindling my interests].
\Sidenote When the Brits say, “Stupid Cow!”, do they mean that literally, or are they saying, “Stupid Can Of Worms!”? Hmm … I muse.
\Surprise I find myself visiting here more often and commenting a bit too … not like me really … thanks to all the folks that makes this place, “the madhouse”, if I can use madam’s words … I like to read the good stuff :-).
\Clueless Ammmaaaa, Ammmbaaaa, Hammmmaaaa, and other mutilations of “MOO” sound closer to the actual “MOO” of the cow … wonder why a shorter variation [like, AMBA, for instance] was not neologised [Do I make sense?].
    \3So … did I moo th3rd?

*Moooooooooooooo* said one cow.. *Maaaaa* said the another cow…
*ammmaaaaaa* said yet another cow… now what happened to these cows? (clue : the dialect is important)

Oh well, me shall reveal answers now..

Cow that said *Maaaaa* ended up starring in tamil movies.. (note: cow from another land has better chance of acting in tamil movie than homegrown cow)

Cow that said *Ammmmaaaa* spent the rest of its life in a dairy farm, enjoying a retired life, since most farms come up with less milk and more water.

Cow that said *Mooooooo* ended up in McDonalds after the neighborhood cattle farm recognised the “mooo” and decided to make burgers out of it.

    Horror story, no?

[gvenum] That’s true, you do hear more buffaloes than cows back in desh, don’t ya. A big part of many a summer afternoons, but that’s a topic for a separate blogpost. As for my blog friends, I gave up on their sanity a long while back, so not to worry :)

[amit] Am flattered. You can picture this cow curtseying politely and then pirouetting around like a happy ballerina. Now that I think about it, a cow ballet, complete with fluffy tulle tutus would be quite interesting. Okay, need to control imagination now. Seriously though, thank you!

[Jay] Word origins have always fascinated me so you have a partner in crime there! And those are some good points you make. I don’t think the ‘ooo’ sound is that prominent in the sound of a cow. There’s more of an ‘aaa’ no? Given that, the origin of the word ‘moo’ being imitative is rather interesting. I need to get myself to a farm and hear it again for confirmation sake, I guess :)

Am glad the madhouse makes you depart from your norm and comment more frequently. The things we have to do to get people to comment, I tell ya! ;)

[Sriram] Scary it is! Sounds like a Ramsey Brothers movie for cows. And given the amount of thought that went into this, I feel better than I am not the only one with cows on my mind :)

[aNTi] *raises eyebrow at aNTi as he checks out the scene* And what homely cows have we been checking out lately? Do tell? We’re all fellow cows here, so your secret is safe with us :)

[pingoo] Not seen movie, hence dunno reference? Cute blogger ID, I agree :)

[Hokie] Oooh I likes! A cow that went ‘mooooojhik’ can also be a drunk cow - mooooo + hic? Although a constant diet of Bappi is probably way more damaging than alcohol, so you win :) A cow that listens to R D Burman songs endlessly would naturally sing one. Which one, you ask? Ammaa ammaa, ammaa ammaaa, ye khoobsoorat samaa .. from Shaan. In RD’s own voice, no less. Seriously, a cow with a voice like RD? Now that’s a farm I wouldn’t mind living on! :)

[Paddy] Actually I was thinking of the rap portion of a recent Hindi song that goes hey now, hey now, put your hands up in the air now from a movie Dus. I kinda like the image of cows that look like Abhishek Bachchan and Zayed Khan shaking a leg to it, like in the original :)

[Rohan] PJ? What PJ? I was simply making polite conversation! *innocent angelic expression on face* :)

[Sriram] Hmpfh! I am not guilty. At least not this time.

[aNTi] Thankoo for the education. I did a search on Ramarajan on Google and found a bunch of images of a typical South Indian village bumpkin types. Is that the chap you guys are talking about? Please to elaborate more on why he’s any different/worse than other Southie heroes. If there is a paploo movie hero, I need to learn more about him immediately!

[Megha] This fella, Ramarajan, is a genie-ass with cows.. Fellow was so involved with cows that legend has it that he joined a party based on the cow’s advice. (Apparently, he asked “kamatchi” cow - “whose party to join?”.. cow being a tamil-speaking cow *refer first comment* said “amma” and so he joined “amma’s” party and became M.P too!)

And as for the google search you made, same fellow! now you see the attachment between him and cows?

All the cow languages/dialects have roots in Sanskrit, which probably is a offshoot of the Great Galactic Language, Telangana.

Cow are Devis, a higher class of beings, hence human languages are subsets of the cow language. Our auditory equipment is ill-tuned to understand the profundity of cows words.

It is somewhat unfortunate how most people don’t know the origins of where they are from, the Center of Universe, Nalgonda. This is what SV said about Nalgonda:

“This is the ancient land where wisdom made its home before it went into any other country, the same Telangana whose influx of spirituality is represented, as it were on the material plane, by rolling rivers like oceans, where the eternal Himalayas, rising tier above tier with their snow-caps, looks as it were into the very mysteries of heaven. Here is the same Nalgonda whose soil has been trodden by the feet of the greatest sages that ever lived. Here first sprang up inquiries into the nature of man and into the internal world. Here first arose the doctrines of the immortality of the soul, the existence of a supervising God, an immanent God in nature and in man, and here the highest ideals of religion and philosophy have attained their culminating points. ”

[…] Which comes to my other issue — who said writing pointless and silly posts was a trivial matter? Every one of the cretins who crib and whine about my writing — I’d like to see YOU write something that is silly, pointless and make at least one person in the world smile or laugh. No, seriously. Why is humor/wit/satire (yes we shall be so pompous as to believe we do some of that) given the red-headed step-sisterly treatment in general? Why is serious writing lauded and silly writing, considered less-than-equal? And who decided what was blog-worthy, in the first place? Who says Asha Parekh’s posterior or a cow’s dialect are not serious enough issues? Oh hush, you skeptics. I have a letter here from a very distraught Mr Asha Parekh, that will change your mind. […]
