A disappointment

For those of you who voted in the IndiBloggies, you’ve probably heard of the repoll in the Best Design category. Some of you might have followed the discussion on the IndiBloggies website, so you know what this is about. But for the rest of you, here’s a recap.

Last week, nominations were announced in multiple categories including Best Designed IndiBlog. This blog also made it to the list. Much happiness. A couple of blogs in the first stage of nominations used non-original designs. After receiving negative feedback on their inclusion, the organizers eventually withdrew them from the list and the contest went to the polls. And then they had a change of mind. Thus the repoll.

The organizers, by way of an explanation, claim that it does not matter where a blogger got their design from. Created, inspired, lifted, mutilated - it doesn’t really matter. If it looks good, it qualifies. They go on to add that in honoring a ‘borrowed’ design, they actually mean to honor the ORIGINAL designer, not the person lifting it. And lastly, they add, since templates are part of the ‘blogging phenomenon’ and ‘most blog-wares provide starter templates’, a blog using someone else’s design should still be eligible.

Here’s what we say — Sure. Using someone’s design that has been made public domain (in the form of a theme/template) is most certainly not unethical. I wouldn’t call it plagiarism. But entering a DESIGN contest using someone ELSE’S design IS. If, by honoring a blog that has re-used someone else’s design they are really honoring the original designer, then THAT designer’s name should be on the list, not the person borrowing it, yes? If a piece of writing is a writer’s intellectual property then the same is true of a designer and their design. A designer, by making their design available for public consumption may have waived their intellectual property rights to USE the design, but it doesn’t mean they have allowed you to ENTER A CONTEST with that design.

The organizers also claim that 99% of the blogosphere uses borrowed templates, and only 1% showcases original design and thus it was unfair to narrow the playing field to that 1%. While firstly, I doubt the credibility of that statistic, even if that were true, then why SHOULDN’T that 1% be honored? It is the DESIGN category, for crying out loud! Let’s take a different example. Say 2% of the blogs in the blogosphere are Telugu Indic Blogs. Still only those 2% qualify for the Telugu Indic Blog award, yes? So why should things be any different in Best Design? It is NOT an award for content. It is an award for aesthetics, colors, navigation and user interface. Not how cleverly you can borrow and customize someone else’s creativity.

Anyhoo, this is my take on the situation — it is evident that this award does not respect originality and thus fails the very concepts it sets out to honor. For those of you who voted and are willing to vote again, please do so. For those of you who are sick of the whole affair and don’t wish to vote again, I feel your pain.

Either way, the outcome doesn’t matter anymore.

It was a controversy we could’ve done without. If that’s IndiBlogger’s take on design plagiarism then Anu Malik is the best musician in the whole world.
Anyway, I voted for this blog again.

    oops.. missed it …
but surely of all the blogs i have visited here u go with some of the plus points of you blog after my analysis.
    1. Has more room for the content.
    2. Not Gaudy
    3. Quality in terms of the interface and facility for user responses
    4. very well organised ( this is for the blog as well as for the design of the template )
    5. In the little exposure i have got in the blog world … the design to ME is original ;-)

all the best for your “work in progress:”

Worry not dear. Repoll or not, original or plagiarised, creative or borrowed — the readers are sure to give credit where it’s due. A li’l birdie tells me that you are winning the Best Design category by a huge margin.

    Hear hear.

I think the whole idea is ridiculous. So if a really good borrowed template is used on ten different blogs, and tweaked in minor ways on each (minor from the point of view of a designer), does everyone get nominated? So the winner is probably the one with the maximum number of readers, right? If only one blog gets nominated, and the point is to honour the original designer, then how do you choose from the ten blogs?

You’re right. The outcome doesn’t matter anymore.

On a related note, I nominated you for the Bloggies best design award a week or so ago :)

I fall into the category of people who wouldn’t care for these awards any longer. I haven’t been following the discussion, but reading your post, it seems to me that the sponsors are trying to be as “inclusive” as possible by accomodating the designs that are not original as well. The ulterior motive may be to generate more publicity/hits for their blog and awards by lowering the bar for nominations.

[Greatbong] Thanks once again. Hope you win :)

[Rumpy] Nice to know .. *smile*

[Territorial Male aka ASY] All those attempts to rig gone down the drain. I sympathize. But seriously - thank you.

[ammas] Yes, as Herman Melville once said - It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.

    [Anthony] Thank you!

    [sri] Glad you liked.

[theseventhseal] I agree, the readers are the only hope these awards have. And who is this pesky li’l birdie spreading these rumors? Huh huh?

[Anurag] Thankoo. Won’t mope about it anymore :)

[observer] Very glad you asked. More than a year ago I *used* to have a template that was a heavily-tweaked version of Blogger’s Harbor template. I’ve said so on my blog in several places, so no secret there. However, since a year, I’ve switched to my own template and the current theme on WordPress that I use is also a variant of my own creation. Still, if you continue to find similarities between the two, that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. However - I wish you didn’t offer that opinion anonymously. I find it always better to be able to associate a person with an opinion.

[Rajesh] Yes, exactly! Well said. I am not sure if out of those ten, the blog with the maximum readership gets nominated, or it is a much simpler case of the first person who nominates themselves beats the other nine. Either way, it loses credibility. And thank you :)

[aNTi] Thankoo. As always, your version of the song cracked me up all over again :)

[blogman] Touche! I couldn’t have said it any better myself.

    Megha,
ur blog really boasts of an ADMIRABLE design and i wuldnt hesitate even a bit to vote for u AGAIN…
BUT…kintu parantu…i dont quite agree with ur argument of only honouring the blogs with the
original design…the bindu here is that if a blogger takes an existing template and builds upon it..then he too deserves the accolades…the intent of having the BEST DESIGN AWARD is, i believe, to
honour the individualistic, intellectual touch that translates to a visually appealing blog.

And juss for argument sake, why does every blog page has a “heading” at the TOP???
and a “footer” at the bottom…
why does the frame containing the links to the previous posts or links to fellow bloggers present on the left..
    :-))))
talk about thinking out of the box….arent all of us inspired by something…
Inspiration is what drives our DESIGNS..aint it?

I believe the AWARD does respects originality and the only low point about this award is ppl losing faith in it.

Would love to c u win this award..My Best wishes.. :-)))

I came here from the indiebloggies it self. My blog was first nominated in the Best designed blogs. and then the controvercies about the originalities and other things started. I, my self, would genereally stay away from such awards and all stuff, though the hits from that pages on my blog made me notice that someone have tagged my blog under best designed blog award. since then I have been following the ridiculous yet strangely funny debate there.

I read your views here, and what makes me wonder is, why would you think a best design blog has to be an original design afterall. moreover, the question is, what do you mean by a design of a blog anyways. Is is the template design, or a theme design, or a blog-design. If we are to go anything by the ‘whole-original’ thoery then i am sure you remember you’re using a “wordpress” script, that basically is a script designed by someone else, that you’re adapting for your blog. Isn’t it funny to see the conflict is basically not abt the design, but about the preceptions.

Sure. Using someone’s design that has been made public domain (in the form of a theme/template) is most certainly not unethical. I wouldn’t call it plagiarism. But entering a DESIGN contest using someone ELSE’S design IS.

If this is what you’re saying then any blogs wouldn’t be eligible to enter the award. As none of them are original.

anyhow, the discussion is going no where, and i am probably just blabbering here, but well, this is just my two cents.

    Ekta.

    Ekta,

Your comments have few common characteristics as mine. Both were written using the combinations of the same 26 character set.. Both follow the same pattern of left to right and top to bottom. They are not alike; in fact they are controversial. But they could have been perfect clones if I have written something like this.

“I bounced here right from indiebloggies. Prior to the controversies about imitations got fired up, my blog was nominated for the “best designed blogs” award. I personally have no propensity towards awards and honors, but the hits from those pages caught my eye revealing the nomination. From that point onwards, I have become a spectator of the pointless arguments posted on that site.”

I agree with both of your guys, Ekta and Gaurav.. “Why invent the wheel again.” But we are not concerned about the basic design, but how well it has been rendered. Every composition is made from a standard set of musical notes, but they are not identical. This is true when a musical maestro like illayaraja composes it. But, not when a music director like Anu Malik copies it.

[Aditya] Thanks for the vote. And glad you agree. Although I am sure there are others who think I am entirely wrong too.

[vrreddy] I’m guessing that there’s a whole bunch of people out there who disagree with me but won’t really care to express their disagreement here, so the opinions in my commentspace may not be a fair representation of the general opinion. Having said that, it is gratifying to know that some of you agree with me.

[Bhanu] Thank you Bhanu for the very kind words and thank you for your vote. It will be an understatement to say that I am flattered. Thanks again.

[Hombre de Marte] Thank you! And hey, you know how much entertainment I get out of mocking Bollywood inspirations, remember? :)

    [Raj] Thank you :)

[Shruthi] Hello! I believe you’ve commented on my blog once before, but I am glad to see you around again :) Glad you like the design as well as what I write here and thank you for your vote. And you are right - there’s no point in wasting time on this whole affair anymore. Time to get back to regular programming ;)

[raj] Thanks for the support! As for Krishnamurthy uncle, we’ll see :)

[Vasu] Thankoo. And I’m guessing it is just an award title and nothing else?

[Gaurav] Thank you for the nice words about my design and for your input in this matter. I agree that design is ultimately about an individualistic intellectual touch. Everything can be considered an inspiration from something else, yes. Concepts like creativity and inspiration are inherently incapable of being measured, so what we are trying to judge is considerably nuanced. But it comes back to the same thing you talk about. The individualistic touch. While perhaps immeasurable, it is very perceptible. And originality, to me, is when that individualistic touch is very obviously tangible.

Also, I must add that I wish the IndiBloggies folks’ take on this had the same kind of clarity that your words do :) As for a blog following the standard header-sidebar-footer format, here’s an example of something a little different - AlgoMantra.

    Thanks for stopping by!

[Ektz] About the use of WordPress, this discussion was never about publishing platforms and frameworks. There are tools that let you do your work, and then there is your work itself. Microsoft Word doesn’t win the Booker Prize, the writer who writes a book using Word as a tool, does. In any case, I have stated my opinion in my post already so I shall resist belaboring the point and being redundant. Glad you stopped by and thank you for your input.

[Ekta] The word ‘design’ of course, applies to two different things in the technical world. One is the Technical Architecture/Design. And the other is the more commonly understood Visual Layout and User-Interface design.

I’m guessing (though I could be wrong) that the awards in question meant the awards were meant only for the second category. And the use of Wordpress as your blogging engine, comes under the first category.

Still with me? Okay. Visual design/User-interface design of any website involves a lot of hard work. A blog is a specific kind of website (so you have less parameters to worry about) but there are still a very large number of decisions to be taken. You have to think about what kind of layout to use. Does the header go on top? Or on the left with the words reading from bottom to top? Or on the right, reading from top to bottom? Do you want a footer? Does the sidebar go on the left or the right? Do you want two sidebars or one? What font looks right? What about machines where that font is not present? What choice of colors should be used? What combination of images looks right for the theme of the blog? Should there be any images at all? Should the background be fixed? Does the design work well on all browsers? What about accessibility? What if I try to browse the blog using my cellphone or a PDA? Do screen-readers work well with the blog? Will colour-blind people be able to read the blog? What about the archive pages, category pages (if applicable) and individual post pages? Do they look the same as the main blog page? And what about other pages? (Look at the links at the top right of this blog for examples)

I’m not saying you have to reinvent the wheel from scratch to enter a contest. You could start out with a basic layout like say the Kubrik theme, or maybe the Fleur-De-Lys theme (as used on your blog). But it is possible to change the look of a blog drastically with even minor changes. Maybe the designer only adds/changes some images to give the blog a completely different look. But changing one header image, adding one to the sidebar, rounding some boxes, adding shadow effects to some borders, or reordering the sections in the sidebar does not make an original design!

The decision about whether the design is eligible to be nominated for an award, would need to be based on how much the design customization affects the look of the blog. How much value-addition did the changes give it? How much was the improvement? Is 90% of the reason for your being nominated for best design, the work of the someone else? Customizations should be included in nominations for Best Design, as an exception, and not as a rule.

Of course, the decision would be subjective. But that means that it should be taken by a neutral jury with a certain amount of design experience (not necessarily web design). The jury cannot consist of one person! One person is a judge!

If there are not enough original blog designs to be nominated in the design category, then drop the category from the awards! Create a category where blogs with truly original designs are given special mention.

But enough ranting. Those who don’t agree with what I’ve just said, probably never will. Megha’s said it perfectly. The outcome doesn’t really matter anymore.

Well, without the The Indibloggies competition I would probably never found your blog. I do like your design, but quite frankly, I can’t be bothered whether you have pretty clouds on top of your design or prettier borders that the other contestants. The reason I came back was your previous humorous article about your mother’s astrologer.

[Meghs] For one, I’m not in favor of someone coming and telling me, “ooo! you have very nice blog. your posts are nice, so let me give you this award”. That is not something I write for. We all do it for our own satisfaction. With that being the case, why should we even bother about polls? All yer readers know how popular you are and how we poke fun at everything. I’d say this post wasn’t needed, but again, that’s just my opinion. Right now, I’m a little confused (tiny little bit only) about a few things. will be back to abuse your comment space shortly. In the mean-time, let’s throw all awards into dustbin. if they gave you something, they gave it. If not, they didn’t. That’s where it ends. We are not going to display the awards and nor are we looking for publicity achieved thro such means. Right? (Ok ok, I stop here)

Lo..Tum Jit gayi.Proving that yours is the best designed blog no matter what folks say ..Oh I forgot Congrats are in Order :)

    Best Designed IndiBlog
A walk in the clouds.. by Megha wins with 37% votes and strengthened my belief in the power of “collective wisdom”. Yeh public hai, sab janti hai. This category witnessed some heated arguments on the scope of the award. The Jury was of a divided opinion, nominees rejected were unhappy and it was time we left the decision to the junta. This is the only category at the Indibloggies that had “all” the publicly nominated blogs competing for the award. The opinion that has clearly emerged out of the debate that followed it is that people do want that to come up to its name the category should only recognize original designs in future. Megha wins:

    * An award Rs.500/- from Ganesh of Rupya.com.
    * One Indibloggies T-Shirt sponsored by Sakshi Juneja.

    PATS lost :(
with a wrong call on samuel’s “pass interference”. Followed by the worst interception I have ever witnessed. What a shame??? But champions are champions! The New England Patriots.

If paddy is such boling, then, I have something to cheer on. Congratulations Megha!

OK am I done?/? Yes congratulations. Good night.

Good luck for the award, though the idea of drawing up nominees and giving out awards for blogs seems to suggest that someone has way too much free time on their hands (is someone actually going through all the blogs out there?). But then again, one keeps hearing that blogging is no longer a tool for quiet soliloquy, but increasingly a major journalistic medium. So maybe, it isn’t as far-out as I seem to think, though it does cause the idea of blogging to lose its quaint, ‘hatke’ charm, atleast for me.

    My rambling notwithstanding, good luck.

Let me put it this way.
Designers and engineers use a lot of tools to create a car. Software, computers, machines, labour. Using all this stuff, they build a lovely vehicle. They can honestly claim to have designed the car, even though they use infrastructure created by other minds.
Now, I buy that car. I get myself some snazzy seat-covers. Hang some fluffy dice from the rear-view mirror. Borrow some spray-paint and stencil my initials on the hood. And then, very happy with myself, I go out for a drive. And pass an Auto Show.
Would I be able to enter this beautiful car in the Best Design contest? Under my own name, on the grounds that I had the good sense to buy it, and have added a bit of my personality to it?

    [Rajesh J Advani]

May I steal that note, sir? It makes a wonderful checklist!

Pardon our manners. We should have said this first.

Congratulations! We love it when quality triumphs.

[Decamisado] My pleasure! Though I must say the checklist is incomplete :) I must have missed out a number of other points. Like page weight, usability, testing on different screen resolutions, the need for horizontal and vertical scrolling, etc.

See how even iconic songs like “Dil tadap tadap” have been “lifted”. The point is not about being original. It is about being creative. If you can take something and make it suit your context, your mood… it deserves a prize.

(You won and the blog rocks).

“While firstly, I doubt the credibility of that statistic, even if that were true, then why SHOULDN’T that 1% be honored? It is the DESIGN category, for crying out loud!”

Precisely. It is the design category. If somebody has had the _unique_ taste of using a template that nobody else has : congrats. Cos he/she has displayed _unique_ taste. Else the whole blogosphere would’ve had the same template. Design awards are for using building blocks, not making them : or should be. Awards for best templates are basically geekbased.

If somebody has customised one to suit his/her blog, and the effect rocks … why, it DESERVES the award. Cos using a template is but a starting point.

Consider this : if this same template had been used, say, for desipundit (linkfest based) or any of the political/topical blogs, it would’ve sucked.
    :))

    [RJA] Adding to that list,

    * Search engine friendliness
    * JScripts and Stylesheets in a separate URL v/s embedded
    * DIV v/s TABLE and similar HTML choices
    * onHover available in Firefox, so JScrpt hacking needed in IE and other cross browser issues
    * Beating the outputs from 3rd party services like blog-maps etc into your look and feel
    * Image editing for the internet

Congrats! Though I had voted for you the first time round..I just gave the whole second round a miss.
It was ridiculous to say the least and I though it was not even worth going through it again. Infact even the first time round in the best tag category…one of the tagline had a spelling mistake: “existance”!

Whatever, all’s well that ends well :)

    BANG ON!!

This was exactly what I was fight about with Debhashish on the repoll category. I stayed away from repoll as I thought it was completely useless and didnt matter anymore.

In any case, you won, and you DESERVEDLY won! This is the best “originally” designed there is in Indian Blogosphere, and the award has to repsect that!!

    Cheers!

[All] Thankoo all for writing in and for the congratulatory wishes. As a bit of a departure from tradition, I am not going to write individual replies on the rest of the comments on this thread. This topic has been flogged plenty already and it is time to leave the horse to die, I think. Plus we have some fresh inspired silliness up on the blog, so let us go waste our time on that instead :) Ta!

ps .. Boo hoo. The Patriots lost. Pliss to not rub it in! *sniffle*
