Thodaa khaao thodaa phenko

This started out as a response to Vivek’s comment on my previous post. So you should go read his comment first. It is nicely written, plus this post will make a whole lot more sense to you, if you do. Of course, this response began as a quick walk to the corner store, but seeing as it has has quickly assumed Dandi march proportions, it has become a post.

So here’s the thing. I am not much of a ranter on my blog. In the one-hundred-thirty odd posts that I have on this blog, about four of them qualify as rants. But every time I rant, I don’t think it is necessary that I be subjected to the ‘Why did you react to them? You shouldn’t let them affect you so much’ response. I know it is well-intentioned and I agree that one shouldn’t get worked up over trivial things. I also understand that hate commenters do what they do because they believe that negative attention is better than no attention. What is also known as the Mika Singh school of public relations.

But the truth is, I am really not worked up. I rant, because ranting is fun. I am not deeply affected by the nasty comments people leave me. I’m far too shallow for that. I spent about five minutes of my life writing the previous post. Now perhaps, the vitriol in that post made you believe I was very angry? That my blood pressure shot up a couple of points cos someone asked me the color of my lingerie? If that is the impression you got, then it is a wrong one. I mock the people that annoy me, not out of anger, but for amusement. It is a cathartic experience, to say the least, so pliss to let me have my fun?

Also, my rant was not against comment SPAM, as has been mistakenly assumed. These are not comments with helpful suggestions on where I can buy sleeping pills and Viagra. (I do wonder though, why anyone would need both of those at the same time. But I digress.) These are not penis enlargement offers, nor are these comments selling me videos of zebra sex. (Don’t even ask.) These are actual people, with blogs of their own, who leave hate comments. So why don’t I link to them when I rant against them? That would be a very good question to ask, if you were to ask it. But I have an answer. (Of course I do. Nobody calls a question a good question, unless they have a ready answer to it. Duh!) The reasons are two — a) I am reacting to what these people say to me and not who they are b) I am not going to link to them and give them more traffic. So phooey.

You talk about technology on your blog, because YOU believe it is what you do best. Not because your reader Joe Mama believes so. (Joe Mama, son of Vasco Da Gama, who went to the drama, without a pajama .. No? None of you ever learnt that rhyme as a kid? Deprived childhood, tsk tsk.) You write what you write, because YOU would like your blog to be technology-centric. But I call my blog a personal blog. Not a humor blog or a movie blog or a PJ blog. Just a personal blog. I crack a silly joke. I get sentimental about a song. I get excited about a cheesy movie. And I get annoyed by a hate commenter. It is all me. And my annoyance, much like my silliness or my humor, rightfully belongs on my blog. My priority for my blog, if I were to ever come up with one — is to be myself and try to write decently. As long as that’s achieved, there’s no other priorities that I need to change.

You’ve read my ‘light-hearted’ posts for a while now, but have never commented. But this time, I wrote something you did not like, and you made an exception to your no-comment habit. You delurked and reacted. You also realized that your comment isn’t going to change what I write on my blog, but you still felt it necessary to say how you felt about it. You spoke up because you didn’t like what you read. Then why is it so hard to accept when I do the same thing? And on my own blog, at that?

There. The customary post for the week is done. Now I shall go back to my rabbit-hole where, staying in the spirit of the post, I shall watch the K C Bokadia classic Kab Tak Chup Rahoongi (1988), starring stud-boy-of-the-80s Aditya Pancholi and Amala. Sigh. Silence sometimes has such a terrible price to pay.

Tut tut… You provide wikipedia links to the Dandi March and worse, Vasco Da Gama in your post?! You insult your readers’ intelligence.

PS: Hey, I know that rhyme too! Except we used to sing, ‘Bo the domestic llama’…

Megha, Sometimes people think you are too sweet. Sometime people think you are too bitter. And I better stop this comment, before I say “Kabhi tu Bobby lagti hain, kabhi tu Azaad laagta hain” and start dancing in the rain….

Incidentally, where do you get gems like “Kab Tak Chup Rahoongi” ? I recommend a viewing of “Zaheerelay” while you are at it.

I abject youvar haanar, I the not agree with some things and I agree wiht somethings. being the vhery nice bhaai that I am, I will start with things I agree :

“I rant, because ranting is fun. ” - Yes, this we agree. I always go into rant mode when I want to have some fun.

“I mock the people that annoy me, not out of anger, but for amusement. It is a cathartic experience, to say the least, so pliss to let me have my fun? - this we totally agree!

    Now for the disgareements :
“I’m far too shallow for that.” -This we heavily abjecting youvar haanar. WE are shallow, and not you. :P.. oh wait….

“You spoke up because you didn’t like what you read. Then why is it so hard to accept when I do the same thing? And on my own blog, at that?” - THis we heavily abjecting it. Reacting to trolls is one thing, but reacting to (NO swearing, no swearing) lurkers who have no clue about the fun we have here is totally another. You dish-appoint us. We should be swearing at you, but since you have been a nice gurl, we will drop the issue. As remedy, you shall post a hundred posts in … lets see… umm… a month.. yeah. that sounds right. Else, we curse you with all our knowledge of bad voo doo and shall bring a couple of our trolls too.

“My priority for my blog, if I were to ever come up with one — is to be myself and try to write decently.” Whaaaaaaaaat????? Does this mean censors are working over time on the blog? No more madhuri dixit’s rain dances or mallika sherawat posts? Baaaaaaaaah.. I’ll go sulk in the corner.

And on a serious note, I HATE TROLLS. (Except female trolls, who are welcome to my blog). *And you thought I was going to be serious? HA!*

See? you always say I naat comment on poshtings.. we make BIG comment now.. and we DEMAND atleast two female trolls as a fee. Fair deal? :D

On an uber-serious note, chill out re. Yeh blog bakwaas ka place. Serious posts ka place anderson cooper ka blog mein hain. (I’m pretty sure that line has about 20 grammatical errors, but that would have brought a smile to your face, no?)

Can the previous comment be excused and not be mocked at on the grounds that I was drunk?*

    * This may or may not be true and the author might just be blatantly bad at hindi. Any attempt to make fun of the author’s hindi will be met with a barrage of badgers thrown at a 45 degree angle, to maximize projectile distance.

    Dear Megha,
    We come in peace.
This blog has of late become a haven for us, to unwind, relax and sometimes to let our guard down. If you rant for the the fun of it, most welcome. But we have come to believe that this blog, as readers, is ours too…a kind of twisted illogical ownership: born out of love.
That doesn’t mean we will go crazy on you a la Glenn Close. But when you or your blog is attacked, through vicious comments or by other means, we do feel angry and hurt.
The internet has created this illusory, close-knit community where strangers who don’t really know each other feel like they do, just because of personal blogs like yours.
Even though we may never really know each other, as humans it is our tendency to form personal bonds..even with strangers. It is this tendency which has brought so many people, from diverse backgrounds, to your blog as readers. It’s through your posts that we try to fathom the kind of person you are: we may not want to do so, but it is a part of who we are.
As for people who comment ’cause they don’t like what they read here…I think it is just their way of feeling superior. Those who can’t …teach.
Always be yourself or your projected self or your inner self or whatever suits you best. We will read your posts anyway. You have us hooked and there is no going back.
On a different note, don’t scare us with words like decency. The next thing we know, you will be writing PC posts. Ther where are we supposed to go?
I have to ask - Curiosity and all. What is this about Zebra sex? This is the first time I have heard about it. Have seen all the other ones including the classic “I have money in Nigerian bank but need money to get it”. I love that one.
Recomended movie of the week: Pushpak(1988)

I cannot agree with you more on this because I feel the exact same way. This is your blog and you should be able to write whatever it is that catches your fancy. I do it all the time at “tabula rasa”. My ranting, my venting, my pimping, my ridiculing, and my reminiscing is not only a form of catharsis, but also a means to recollect whatever I write today some forty years from now. Yes, I assume that I’ll live till then. So yes, my blog is often a diary of sorts that chronicles random thoughts from my brain from time to time.

Vivek’s comment almost appears as if he expects a certain standard from you, which is not a bad thing, but ultimately one has to realize that you can write whatever you want over here. And obviously, standards are relative … I personally loved the reply that you gave to the hate commenters, even if you were only venting and not intending to actually reply. And I loved it because I could empathize with you on that particular topic. Are there other posts from you that I don’t particularly care about? Heck, yeah. But I don’t make an asshat out of myself voicing my displeasure over something you write. And that’s because it’s your blog. And it’s your words and the way you choose to express yourself. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I love it, other times I’m blah about it. But it would take much effort and time to comment on each post and the way I feel about it. Guess some people have all the time in the world :). Well, good for them.

Comments make good conversation threads, but I’d rather be selective than shoot my mouth at every post. And this is just my opinion, not the holy grail; I don’t expect anyone else to be selective. So change nothing, Megha. Overall, I love your creativity, your innovative word-play and innuendos, and your genuine expression. Few people have the ability to engross readers like you do and you only seem to be getting better at it. So, there. Leaving this comment is cathartic, sure you know what I mean. Whew!

I have been visiting your blog on and off for a while now but this is the first time m leaving a comment. Like your posts - they’re pretty funny. But what I really enjoy is picking clues between those funny lines to try to solve the mystery surrounding your gender. I am hoping it is still a mystery and please excuse me if I have missed any important disclosures. So anyway, when I read your rant recently, was too happy that finally it was solved – megaholamonia’s author is a female hands down. Actually, thought that rant was a give away.

But if, as you claim, you have not spent more than five minutes writing it, I have to give it to you- you have pulled me back on square one. Pretty good! Anyway, I don’t intend to find out what your gender really is. And I am sure this is a pretty beaten-to-death topic for you. Just hope you continue to write, rant and reflect.

You got me all wrong Tomato! Beshak you can what ever you want to find ! I only meant the conflict from the two sentences(of yours) I mentioned above, where your actions (” picking clues between those funny lines to try to solve the mystery surrounding your gender”) doesnot exactly match your words (”I don’t intend to find out”) in the other sentence. I don’t care what you want to find about her. I am quite sure she knows how to handle those from what we gather from her previous blogs. :)

    Megha,
This isn’t a comment on this post, but since it’s the most recent one… I just got an e-mail about a contest to write a cheesy predictable Bollywood movie, and the first thing that popped into my head was your blog and your absolutely hilarious, laugh-till-the-tears-come-out-of-your-eyes, stay-up-reading-till-5-a.m. kind of writing. Some of your blogs, in my opinion, are almost scripts already, though I do think that if someone’s going to make a movie out of it (even a 12 minute one), it’s probably worth more than the $501 offered. Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with this contest or the director (I’ve just seen–and enjoyed–Flavours, that’s all), but would love to see some good parodies of cliched Bollywood storylines, and as I said, you’re tops at that! And that’s the extent of my self-interest in this. Don’t want to spam you, so instead of sending the link, I’ll just tell you that the site is called whackywednesday. I wonder if Vivek himself read it?! and what would he think about it?! Personally, I share a common opinion of most of ‘em here. Vivek expected some standard from you, a kind of standard that you expect from a good friend (standards are relative),in good light. You.Your Blog. Your Space. Period. We all like the way you play your words and we are addicted to it, and the condition is getting only worse..*Coughs* and we’d luv to remain like that. You are a wonderful writer, but we have formed a bond with you, which may be far more complex on this virtual space, that we have come to expect this space as ours, something that we think is a part of us, like a best friends notebook, which he would be glad to share, but would not like anything sleazy be written. We like to share this, that can only take this bond to higher levels. and as a set of well wishers, WE will never taint your pages, the others, you wouldnt care a damn anyway. Pigs will be Pigs.

Oh dear Gvenum..(I am pulling out my hair now strand by strand by strand..) but nay instead of another clarification …I shall only chant the Lords’ …nth commandment that mysteriously appeared in Steve Jobs’ blackberry a few years ago – it goes like this: “thou shalt not get distracted by fellow comments and disrespect the blogspace author.”

In other words, it means (fyi: conflict #3) I understand completely you’re just trying to point contradictions in what I was saying …but perhaps that comment space is “primarily” for feedback to Megha’s posts and not mine. Peace…deep breath..Ohhmmmmm…

You have inspired me, nonetheless. I shall launch my own blog soon – National Tomato- it will be called. Just figured if my writing can provoke any feedback at all, it won’t hurt to have one of my own. And oh, the blog will be packed with tons and tons of conflict and even a special pick-out-the-conflict sweepstakes. However, at this time, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my apologies and gratitude to Megha (sorry Megha, I am using your blog to advertise mine but this chance was too good to pass up and you know how difficult it is these days to get your foot in the door in the blogosphere without getting your toes all squashed unless of course you have a genuine talent such as yours).

[witnwisdumb] Uff, the reason I link is not because I assume my readers to be Google-challenged or Wikipedia-challenged. I link cos I like to see little bits of blue text in my sea of black words. So there. Happy now? :)

[Greatbong] Wunnerful. I am bittersweet chocolate. I always imagined myself to be more of a ‘fruit and nut’ types though. But okie, ye bhi chalega. And Kab Tak Chup Rahoongi comes from friendly desi-store uncle. He looks at me with fatherly love, seeing as I am single-handedly responsible for keeping his obscure and crappy movie shelves dust-free.

[Sriram] Arrey, now you are going to make me write another post kya? Where I will rant about ‘I will react to the lurkers who react to my posts on trolls, because this is my blog and they are my lurkers and .. ‘ you get the drift :) And not to worry. I am not suddenly going righteous and shareef on you all. The pondy-ness and maa ki aankhs shall remain, as always.

(pliss notice that I did not take *any* digs at your Hindi)

[Amol] Indeed, blogs and commentspaces bring strangers closer, even if the closeness is not completely real. And a sense of protectiveness towards a blogger you regularly read, is somewhat understandable, even if not entirely valid. As for my suddenly getting all decent on you, c’mon now. You didn’t really think that was ever going to happen, did you? :)

[Rumpy] Arre baba. The mama was actually the beta. So the baap was actually the bhaanja. Confused? Good. As for thoda khaao thoda phenko .. surely you got the JBDY reference? Else, not only have you had a deprived childhood, your adulthood under that rock was not much different.

    [Falstaff]

    (I can’t resist)

Try saying Ohm. It helps. (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

[Vinay] Touché! (Someone got the reference! Someone got the reference! Yayyy!)

[Rk] Thankoo. And the movie hasn’t yet been watched. Will give update when the deed is done.

[Munimma] There wasn’t any need for a disclaimer. I absolutely agree! In fact, you all should take over my blog sometime. Will be fun to play mute spectator :) Hmm, now you’re giving me ideas! And I really cannot blame the video rental place, when I am the one who goes seeking such movies from it, can I?

[GHE] Okay, will watch. What is the Prabhuji connection for this phillum though?

[anantha] Now now, not to unfairly accuse. Sriram has written complete posts about his Hindi and I’ve never mocked him there either. Truth is, he would never be as liberal with the unwanted ‘h’s while swallowing them where they are needed. See, honest I am :) Bottomline - there’s not many people in the world, who can take a catchy hit song picturized on two reasonably hot people and turn it into a lifetime comedy instead. You can hardly blame me or the ‘mentally deviated’ people who read this blog, for considering you speshal for that :)

[Someone who loves dogs] Your comment is very well put (and perhaps much more concise than I could ever be.) I agree, it is pretty nice that people expect certain standards from you. (As long as they are reasonably high.) But with expectations will come disappointments and it is inevitable that I will write something that will not be acceptable/palatable to some others. But all I can say to that is - if I set out to please everyone all the time, I’ll stop pleasing myself, which will completely defeat the purpose of my blogging. Am glad you could relate to the venting and the catharsis, both. And wow, thank you much for such effusive praise! I’m flattered much like a road-roller went over me :)

    [ZimbleMinded]

    I write. When I wanna.
    They complain. When they wanna.
    I react. When I wanna.
    They ignore. When they wanna.

Blog: My space. Comment: Their and my space both.

Vivek wasn’t being crass or boring. I just disagreed with him. So I said so.

And I have seen Pyaar Jhukta Nahin (1985). Twice. In a dingy smelly Kanpur theatre. With mysterious wet spots on the floor. And paan thooks on my neck. After that, Mithun howling tumse milkar na jaane kyon, aur bhi kuchh yaad aata hai in Shabbir Kumar’s voice seemed like a very small deal. And that is not all. I went and watched Teri Meherbaniyan (1985) too. Jackie Shroff should have reviewed his career graph right then when a dog had a bigger part in a movie than him. Ah well.

[IndiCommenter] True, guilty as charged. I would have have talked about gabbing in lust. (Don’t think I could have brought myself to mention MNaidu and the Karan Razdan creation she starred in though) Or better still I would have talked about home of Bakha (aka Bakha-vas). Not to be confused with Barkha Roy, sister of Reena Roy. See how we tied it in with your previous comment? Smart, we are.

[Fleiger] I am the person this movie is based on, remember? So I need to act like I am above all this publicity-wublicity business. I get to hair-toss, eyelash-flutter and have Page 3 photos taken. They’re making a movie on her life, do you know? people will whisper as I pass. But I will smile charmingly at the flashbulbs but walk away pretending to be oblivious to the attention, thus achieving the right blend of pomposity and indifference.

    [Jay Sun] Indeed!

[Raj] Glad you liked :) And tchah, hat a waste of the ‘good question’ line by your colleagues. And Zakhmi Zameen you say, eh? I’d imagine Jayaprada look like stud-boy-of-the-80s’s mommy in it? I can’t wait to find out.

[Diana] You are indeed lucky. Hate commenters, while fun to rant at are something everyone could do without. Welcome to the blog and hope to see you around more! I take it you came upon my blog through Helmi’s?

[gvenum] Vasco’s mom was an only child?

    [HP] :)

[dominique] First to comment? You didn’t see any of the commenters before you? But in any case, thankoo :)

[Sriram] *contented smile on face* Very clever I am, no? Always finding new new ways to get traffic to my blog!

[National Tomato] My being a female is basofied in har sauce-sauce mein of this blog and yet you thought I was only leaving mere clues about my gender? You have a lot of ketchupping to do! *sheepish grin* Sorry, I had to get the tomato puns out of the picture, else I wouldn’t have been able to sleep in peace tonight :)

Now, onto more important matters. Welcome to the blog. Glad that you decided to delurk and comment and make sure you do it more. But I’m surprised that you thought I had been dropping little clues about my gender when I thought it was always apparent? My name itself should have made things obvious, no? But in any case, now you know :) Also, the commenters on this blog are an unruly bunch, but they are mostly well-intentioned people. So pliss to not mind their silliness and picking on you. The best way to deal with them is precisely the way you did - pick back on them and give them some grief :) Also, Since your little spat with [gvenum] has inspired you to start blogging (reading my blog never inspired you, but a tiff with him did? Tchah!), maybe you could answer this in one of the posts on your blog - What’s the story behind a name like National Tomato? Much curious :)

[gvenum] Now now, don’t make me get into mommy mode. As the great man Austin Powers would have said - Oh beeehaaaave! Or as the even greater man Amitabh Bachchan sang in Desh Premee - dande ka mujhe istemaal aata hai, tere baal bachchon ka khayaal aata hai. Enough said :)

[shark] Thankoo thankoo! And arrey! My rants are not recreational enough? Tsk tsk. Okie, regular nonsense shall commence soon :)

[CK] Hello and welcome! Much thrilled that my blog brings both laughter and lack of sleep in one’s life :) Plus It is nice to know that when it comes to cheesy Bollywood stories, I am the first person people think of. Such a flattering reputation, I tell you :) Having said that, this whackywednesday dude is someone I approach with some trepidation. He spams desi lists with casting (couch) calls for ‘beautiful good actresses’ who can speak ‘Telgu’ who will shoot films with ’supar stars’. He signs his spam emails off with a link to Desiclub’s Top 50 cool desis, where he admits he ranks a modest #39. And worst of all, he’s a Salman Khan fan. Tell me, how does one trust someone like that? But your suggestion makes me wonder if maybe this script can be turned into a group writing venture on this blog. Ooh, the possibilities! :)

[raj da 2nd] Thank you for the nice words. The virtual closeness of commentspaces leads to a certain amount of protectiveness, I understand. And it is well-intentioned when people expect a certain standard from you. By why should ranting against hate-commenters be considered a drop in standards? Only because it is a rant? That I sold my soul to the devil because I got annoyed? That was my objection, in this post.

    N tomato,
    They got you!
megha’s real name is Meghanad Shankaran Murthy. He is a S/W engineer working for MS. He loves south-indian food and thinks his mom is the greatest cook in the world. Someday, he wants to find the “right” girl and settle down.

Yes… but one part of your role is to drop some hints (like wink wink, nudge nudge and all) about the movie.

Let it be understood that the troll population makes up the front stall rows of the theatre. And even though we will release the movie in multiplexes and all, the major dough (50 weeks running and all) comes from that population.

By the way, I got a good lyricist… do you know who wrote songs like “Madam, Madam, I am your Adam?”

Eeep! “Supar stars” and “beautiful good actresses”! Methinks whackywednesday might be fodder for a future post. Not if you want to enter the writing (not casting!) contest, of course… Plus, if he’s still a fan of Sallu (as we called Salman in his semi-bearable MPK days), you have to wonder what criteria they’ll use to judge the entries… Flavors was phuneee, though!

I have always maintained: To write in public is to suffer inconsequential presumptuous fools. Atleast the odd ones that you sometimes get on your blog have a much better command on the basics of grammar than the ones I sometimes get on mine.

I have enjoyed your writings and have returned here on and off in the past few years. Thank you for sharing, all these years that have passed.

Nasty comments are a natural result of posting our thoughts for the world to read. The policy of, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, shut up,” can never work because of the annonimity that internet offers. We have to learn to read the comments and look away. There’s no point in ranting over things we cannot control, except for the purpose of letting off steam.

    Megha,

Just when I think I want to convey my point of view, you come up with yours and how?!!!
I concurred with Vivek’s view on ur prev post. But then after reading ur current post I very much agree with you (Vivek’s isn’t wrong either). It taught me (yet again!) to understand things from other’s perspective too. Watched “Dead Poet’s Society” over the weekend, Robin Williams asking his students to stand up on the table to see things differently, and now your post.

You are Witty, Very! More please….

Okay this is too much to resist. Now I have to respond, even if this post is old.

[amol] I said this to [gvenum] and I say this to you too - Behave! Just cos [National Tomato] had a bit of doubt about the obviousness of my gender, doesn’t mean you all gang up against him. Tsk tsk. What a ghor kalyug we live in, I tell you! People are not even nice to each other anymore!

[Fleiger] No? Tell me? Who in the world wrote the lyrics for that? And okay, fiiiiine. *reluctant grumbly agreement* I’ll be nice to the trolls since they seem to matter so much to you. Bah. The things I have to do for the sake of a movie.

[CK] Am trying to resist being too mean about WW so far, seeing as I have never directly suffered his spam. But the day I do, a post shall surely make its way here :) Haven’t watched Flavors. Have heard good things about it from several people though!

[AghastInAnakapalle] And what paraaya maal did I apnaofy by dissing Sallu, pray tell?

[./w] Sorry to read about the copycat fools you’ve had to suffer, of late. Glad you enjoy what you read and thanks for stopping by.

[thecowlick] Yep, very true! It is for that very steam-letting-off purpose that one rants. Oh, and welcome to the blog :)

[socrates] Well, thank you! To be honest, I agreed with Vivek’s point of view too. But I agree with mine as well. Heh :) But yes, on a more serious note, there are way too many situations in life where we run into multiple rights and no wrongs. Makes one realize quickly that the world is primarily a nuanced place with a handful of black & white exceptions. But thank you. Glad you like the wit. Shall try to provide more of it. (Hey, that rhymed!)

[Prasanth] Uh oh. That dreaded ‘making of the friendship’ feeling. Such a terrible dilemma to be in, I tell you :)

I am searching for lyricist… and trolls don’t matter, the filled seats in theatres matter to us ;)
